I'm currently playing the Ottomans in the Renaissance era but I can't find the jannisaries anywhere in the tech tree thing or anywhere else..
how do I get them?

Justed checked that out: They are depending on a event_counter timurids_invasion ...
Though that should have happened already att eh start of the Ren. campaign, i believe at least, will check this too.

Result: The events file isn't updated proper for this campaign, will go on the buglist, thanks for making this aware!

There are other Janissary units in the recruitment queue, so the even is being triggered. It's the second gunpowder event on campaign start.
They are buildable from the Dar al-Imara and Sultan's Palace levels of the Town Halls.

I just checked the Ren campaign with Osmans, and they are all available after the first turn (needs one turn from start to have them recruitable per tech-tree), so everything is in order with Janissaries, i'll remove this point from the buglist.

okay, so it still doesn't work after building the sultans palace. I can only remember getting one gunpowder event though.
Yup, the second and third gunpowder events don't occur. Tried it again with the French. Do I have to select an in game event thing at the beginning? Where I choose between renaissance and the other eras..

When you start the campaign, you should get the three event, one is the Rinascimento. The other two are gunpowder_discovered, and Timurids_invasion_war (can't remember the name).
If you get all three, it should work.
The timurid even triggers the plate and advanced gunpowder units, so if you have any Yeniceri (Tufeki or archers), it probably worked.

The events I get at the start are the Sicilian vesper thing, the mongol threat (not invasion) and the gunpowder one. I've started multiple campaigns and played a couple of turns on each of them
I looked around the descr_event file and saw that the timurid invasion event was only listed under "test" whatever that means..

It looks like you are running the Late Campaign. This is the default Grand Campaign.
If you want to play the Renaissance you need to choose it from the Custom Campaigns menu.
You should see an "il Rinascimento" intro event, not The Sicilian Vespers, when you start the Renaissance campaign.
