Default XGM: is it any good?

I've read about the XGM mod many times, many seem to play it and so on. But I still wonder:
    1) Is it any good?
    2) What are the improvements?

Hell yes! It's damned good! Especially if you like playing as Greece.

XGM has been around for a long while and is very well developed and respected. It is being continually updated so you would need to keep a weather eye out for new versions but they are easy to install and usually savegame compatible.

The gameplay is very good and it's one of the most stable mods I've come across as I don't recall ever having a CTD with it!

And if you play as Greece you get to use the Spartan Royal Guard, which must be one of the most badass units in the history of RTW.

    XGM ROCKS MY SOCKS OFF!!!
"So there I am, in Sri Lanka, formerly Ceylon, at about 3 o'clock in the morning, looking for one thousand brown M&Ms to fill a brandy glass, or Ozzy wouldn't go on stage that night. So, Jeff Beck pops his head 'round the door, and mentions there's a little sweets shop on the edge of town. So - we go. And - it's closed. So there's me, and Keith Moon, and David Crosby, breaking into that little sweets shop, eh. Well, instead of a guard dog, they've got this bloody great big Bengal tiger. I managed to take out the tiger with a can of mace, but the shopowner and his son... that's a different story altogether. I had to beat them to death with their own shoes. Nasty business, really. But, sure enough, I got the M&Ms, and Ozzy went on stage and did a great show."

It's really good. It gives the Greeks the in-depth gameplay the Romans have in vanilla RTW. I use it combined with Darthmod. So it's the perfect combination for me. The Greeks now have a hell lot of extra units. So if you want a mod that is loads of fun but not tediously difficult go for XGM.

Yeh Xgm is rele cool. Its based more on Greeks rather than like on Rome Total War is based on Romans. There are countless new units for each faction and campaign is really fun. The territory is alot more spread out, and Rome is one nation, rather than 4 roman factions (including Senate) that you get on normal rome total war. Its worth installing it as it doesnt overwrite your Rome Vanilla, its just like installing a totally new game. I highly recommend it but you will have to get used to all the new units, but thats the fun of it all!

Whats the realism like? Is it atleast more historically accurate than vanilla? And EVERY faction gets more units? Thats pretty cool.

Definitely the best mod ever. Go to the XGM sub-forum for a list of features, you can read the readme. But for a short list: More in-depth for Hellenistic Factions, Carthage (particularly), and the introduction of two knew playalbe facitons: Saba and Baktria. Also four non-playables, the ndependant Greeks (Rebels for the Greeks), Roman Rebels, Carthage Rebels, and the Independant Celts, which in my opinion are an extremely good way to represent the constant warring between tribes.

Also as a bonus, its super easy to install! And doesn't edit the original files, so if you don't like it, just delete the xgm folder in your Rome folder

This mod isn't really that good. Instead of Roman imbalance, the game is now Greek imbalance. The greeks get so many units and they are given such foreign names that I don't even know what to do with them.

Which brings up another annoyance for me. I bought an ENGLISH game, with English interface. If a unit is a hoplite, from Sparta, it's called Spartan Hoplite as is appropriate for the English language, not hoplitai spartanai or whatever it's called. If you're gonna change the unit names, why not change every city, building, and province to their original language name? Of course you wouldn't do this because the game would be entirely messed up and confusing, but yet they do this with unit names, just to be "cool."

XGM is an excellent mod if you like Hellenic factions, as it gives them much more depth. It also has a much larger map than vanilla RTW (it was originally the Mundus Magnus map, but DBH has done a lot of modifications to it over the generations of XGM), mostly extending east. One of the big changes is that because of the bigger map the Seleucid Empire is a vast powerhouse rather than being a pushover as in vanilla RTW.

If you have BI you can use it's executable rather than RTW's to run the game, so you can have things like night battles and swimming units, as well as emergent Rebel factions.

Wrong. XGM strives to give The Greeks and Hellenic factions the same level of depth and attention the Romans received but it does not tilt the balance in their favor. The Romans are still every bit as good. XGM on the surface may seem a mod for just "Greek" fans but the other factions are very well represented. XGM is an outstanding mod.

Gods forbid you may learn a thing or two, eh?

Then here's a tip to avoid aggravation...keep playing your ENGLISH game with the English interface and with hoplites from Sparta that are aptly named Spartan Hoplites; as is appropriate for the English language according to you. Frankly, i think Spartiatai Hoplitai has a nice ring to it. Although i'm pretty certain XGM has straightforward names for their Spartans. Last i checked it was the Spartan Royal Guards and Spartan Phalangites..Sounds and reads like English to me...so i'm pretty certain your wrong here as well.

Oh dear gods....you might wanna stay away from EB then....

but yet they do this with unit names, just to be "cool."
This comment is just pure ignorance.

Someone's pissed off... You really don't need to go around mod bashing. Either come up with some real evidence that a mod is lacking or find someone else to whine to.

    lol, nvm.
In response to the responses to hummibears posts: TO tell the truth, I really dont think hes bashing the mod. He hasnt said anything like, it sucks cock, or my mum could make a better mod, he hasnt even said it sucks. Hes simply giving his opinion on why the mod doesnt appeal to him and how it could be improved. To him at least.

Anyways in relation to his post, I think I have to agree that it does seem wierd when the Spartan Hoplite unit has both a greek name and an english name on the title. But in relation to the rest of the mod, it hardly has any effect. XGM is one of the best mods for rtw.
