I searched but didn't find anything on this. It's supposed to come out in 2009. Has anyone here read the old Mars books of Edgar Rice Burroughs? They're kind of obscure I suppose, but definitely good movie material with lots of naked women, explosions, giant flying battleships, aliens, and more explosions. The pessimist in me says it is just another relic of my childhood that Hollywood will destroy, but who knows?

Yes I love John Carter on Mars. I guess they will start with the first book? I think I used to have some comics even of this.

As far as I can tell it will be the first book (A Princess of Mars). They will probably change some of the original plot since Hollywood likely won't suffer a confederate officer to be the main hero, among other things.

    Why the hell not?

Damn I read this book about 40 years ago but seeing the cover makes it seem like yesterday

I forget how many of the series I read in order after that but it was quite a few. That kind of cover is sure to attract teen males

John Norman's World of Gor books were also very good. They made a movie of one but it was a real cheap version I hear

So they're actually going to make this thing after all. Watched the trailers and it looks average. Also, the 250 million dollar price tag is going to sink it for sure. Whoever gave the greenlight to this production and its budget needs to be shot because Disney is going to lose a fortune on it.

Also lol at that old bag of bones Rush Limbaugh talking about those Gor books. I looked them up and there is some kind of nerd subculture that revolves around roleplaying as Gorean sex slaves

The images are nice but the trailer is a bit disappointing, just seems filled with clichés. That budget is probably production+marketing which is normal for this type of movie, still I think it will have a hard time making back the money invested.

Saw tonight and thought it was very entertaining. I hope they make a sequel but it doesn't look like it's gonna happen because it's not doing so hot at the box office.

It will probably turn a profit eventually, with DVD sales, then licenses sold to premium channels, then finally endless repeats on USA and FX. But it's clearly not going to be the blockbuster they hoped it would be when approving the huge budget.

Like I've said, they should have kept "Of Mars" in the title, it probably would have made 10 million more dollars this weekend.

After watching this movie all I can tell right now is that the professional critics should really go to hell once and for all. The major thing lacking was a better marketing campaign to support the most underrated blockbuster of the year.

It's an OK movie, but it lacks something fundamental that would make it memorable. I'm guessing it's a script with scenes that will keep you at the edge of your seat; there was eye candy in the form of a curvaceous chick, flying machines and Martian urban designs, yet the director failed to exploit the background, besides being weak in pacing. Both the antagonists and the second bananas had considerable potential for character development.

In the end, the best scene just remains Carter getting whacked on the back of the head for making assumptions.

I just saw this movie, and I thought it was very good. Maybe even amazing. Such a shame it didn't get the recognition I think it deserves.

It had some pacing problems and the actual conflict was not much fleshed out (e.g. why the semi bad guy was supported by the really bad guy and when why where they wanted to marry the princess but actually didn't)

Imo it had some trouble of going from cheesy action flick to goofy comic with weird Martian aliens. That's bound to confuse or annoy people. I liked the Martian princess and the bits where they actually acknowledged that they were a cheesy pulp science fiction movie like their source material (e.g. where the princess is holding that intro speech only to break out in laughter. It was fitting the scene but also kind of was a wink to the audience).

Certainly was better than quite alot of other comic/book reimaginations. It was fun.
"Sebaceans once had a god called Djancaz-Bru. Six worlds prayed to her. They built her temples, conquered planets. And yet one day she rose up and destroyed all six worlds. And when the last warrior was dying, he said, 'We gave you everything, why did you destroy us?' And she looked down upon him and she whispered, 'Because I can.' "

I liked it as well, but the marketing was awful. Didn't even realize it existed until release.
Some day I'll actually write all the reviews I keep promising...
