    Default Protectorate?

What exactly does a Protectorate do?:hmmm:
"So there I am, in Sri Lanka, formerly Ceylon, at about 3 o'clock in the morning, looking for one thousand brown M&Ms to fill a brandy glass, or Ozzy wouldn't go on stage that night. So, Jeff Beck pops his head 'round the door, and mentions there's a little sweets shop on the edge of town. So - we go. And - it's closed. So there's me, and Keith Moon, and David Crosby, breaking into that little sweets shop, eh. Well, instead of a guard dog, they've got this bloody great big Bengal tiger. I managed to take out the tiger with a can of mace, but the shopowner and his son... that's a different story altogether. I had to beat them to death with their own shoes. Nasty business, really. But, sure enough, I got the M&Ms, and Ozzy went on stage and did a great show."

Hmm well for a good example just look at the roman factions but take away the line of sight, also all there extra cash at the end of a turn goes to you. Sadly its almost impossible to obtain.

Well they can also break it off real easy if you're not careful, the alliances aren't as strong as the Roman factions, just don't attack their allies and don't leave weak spots on your border(though its rare they attack) and it should run smooth.

The game also counts any territories they own as yours. For instance, I was about 5 away from winning in a Julii campaign a couple weeks ago, and I made the Germans my protectorates and I automatically won the game.

They attacked me the next turn and ended it, but whatever, that's life.

Becoming someone's protectorate is a kinda useful tool when you need cash because you can demand like 20K for it and then betray them the next turn and you're good to go.

You get their extra income at the end of every turn, and an unsteady ally. In return, you are expected to protect them. If you are rich enough, you can give them constant gifts of 100-200 denarii and they will stay loyal. (A larger sum also helps if you don't want them to just sit still, but expand.)

Wow that is awesome. I was playing XGM earlier and I had all but beaten pontus (which was the richest faction) so I decided that I could either crush them in my next turn or force them to be my protectorate. I decided on the latter and the next year my income increased tenfold.

Thank you all very much for you're replies.

It is an awesome state of affairs. Its like they surrendered to you, but you spent less energy
But its hard to get, I had to offer the Partians an initial 40k to get them to submit. I got far more out than that :p

In the later patches protectorate is almost impossible to afford. But there are a lot of benefits, and if you don't get betrayed, you will probably make back what you paid eventually.
