    Default Area of Recruitment

Playing as Rome at the moment..

Does anyone have a map or a list of which "Native" units can be trained in each given area?

For example, I have taken all of Sicily, have some roman level 2 and 3 auxillia buildings and the only units I can train are some cheap greek missile troops and nothing else in that area... since it was fairly greek in that period of time, I thought I could train more but apparently not

i noticed too that romans can never train hoplites, who usually show up with level 3 auxilia. just the peltasts with level 2 auxilia + archery range (or whatsitcalled) ....

I think romans can train Italian spearmen who are latin versions of hoplites, they fight in the same way. thats the reason for romans not able to train hoplites. romans can train libyan pikemen in carthage. i think its better that hoplites

romans can train italian spearman (rubbish compared to hoplites, btw) only in the italic cities (ancona, paestum, corfinium, capua, aretium, ariminium and rome), not in the italian greek cities (tarentum, rhegium, croton, syracuse, agrigento and the other one to the north of syracuse). I suppose you're talking about lilybaeum, and yes, the romans can train libyan pikemen there, but that's not a greek city to begin with - it was a carthaginian colony.

WRONG. The Italian spearmen were developed before greek influence

and were different in fighting underhand with a spear versus the hoplite tactic

of neck-stabbing and the whole overlapping shields concept

yes, they do not overlap shield but they have a longer spear and hold them like phalanx

of course I can train some Galic units in northern italy...

I'm currently expanding in Hispania and took Halicarnassus (sp?) and I can't get any local troops besides those damn peltasts... sure I can hire lots of mercenaries though but they are getting expensive as the Selucids are sending in stack after stack and its getting troublesome to replace my losses... have to keep ferrying over roman regulars every few turns

My advice: if you go overseas, pick a city (using spies) with a high enough population (around 3500 at least, after enslaving or exterminating). Apart from building the odd temple to keep it happy, focus solely on romanizing it. auxilia I, II and III, and provincial barracks. Your population is now around 5000 and growing fast enough for you to continuously train roman regulars without depleting its population. The cities you conquer around it you can have focus more on income; roads, ports and markets, in order to maintain a longer campaign financially.

I know this is a newbish question, but after the reforms do the Romans have the auxilia units (the ones with spears)? What units become available after the reform?

Thanks guys (I edited my post completely after Sacratus answered my original question - for anyone confused).

So they just get the legions and auxilia after the reforms? I'm just curious because in the custom battle roster the only non-traditional units you can use are the legions.

The auxilia units are those recruited through AoR. You can recruit like Warbands, IIRC, in Gaul with the right AoRBuildings.

Auxilia are basically all the non-Romans (velites, hastati, principes, triarii, equites, general, and then later the legionaries) in the army.
