Default What's your favourite kind of warfare?

I have played RTW for a pretty long time and have started wondering about other players tactics on the campaign map. I use offensive defense. It sounds pretty crazy, but to say it short: I move into enemy territory and force them to attack me on a position I've chosen. I often do like this at sieges too, I siege and wait for another army. This sort of tactics are excellent for my way of playing, cause I love playing with phalanxes and cavalry as support. I sometimes play as horsearcher-factions too. Then I play pretty offensive, attacking them as they will suffer more from a battle than I do, even if I loose.

I like to make a full plan before I start a campaign. Then just expand in a controlled, but agressive way. Controlled as in only expanding to certain usefull places. Not just blitzing like mad and expanding in every possible direction.

I usually just blitz in every direction possible, and go to war with all of my neighbors almost right away, sometimes I even try to take a town with three or four units (don't always make it though), I still make a somewhat simple plan and calculate what the chances are of me going bankrupt.
I guess I play with carthage to much.

I am totally with you on this one
Blitz like crazy and try to take as many rebel towns as possible as the Julii (and the 2 nearby Gaul towns)
Attack any small army that I come across
Then demand ludicrous sums of money for a ceasefire
Fighting this way is tough but the battle experience that you get is really useful
Why be nice when you can be downright nasty
If at first you don't succeed destroy any evidence that you tried

i usually set goals for myself,(take settlement X, destroy faction y) and try to accomplish them quickly. i then wait for a few dozen turns, and start campaignning again.

I expand slowly but steadily, working each city up so I never have an empty building queue(sp?). In terms of battle, I also prefer to choose the location. I use either very cavalry heavy armies or phalanx armies.

I think I am playing the battles wrong.

I basically just mass archers and infantry. I have exactly 2 ranks.

melee in front and archers behind them. And I use my general for flanking sometimes. But if my infantry wall is long enough I just leave the general in the back for morale.

I have never tried fighting with several lines and units on different flanks and having units in reserve for pluggin in holes. I just have two walls of units basically.

I prefer infantry based factions, and I always try to wage war on just one front. So when being Roman, I tend first to secure borders, then I choose way and explore with a full unit stack, conquer a city, wait here few turns to train appropriate militia, replenish my force, and move on. One Nation at a time with one army to get me the exp

Easy, have a spy infiltrate the settlement youre attacking and when the spy opens the gates just ride in.

My favourite warfare is to follow the historical path that the real faction took. Or take a large chunk of territory and then only wage war against people who attack me first.
"So there I am, in Sri Lanka, formerly Ceylon, at about 3 o'clock in the morning, looking for one thousand brown M&Ms to fill a brandy glass, or Ozzy wouldn't go on stage that night. So, Jeff Beck pops his head 'round the door, and mentions there's a little sweets shop on the edge of town. So - we go. And - it's closed. So there's me, and Keith Moon, and David Crosby, breaking into that little sweets shop, eh. Well, instead of a guard dog, they've got this bloody great big Bengal tiger. I managed to take out the tiger with a can of mace, but the shopowner and his son... that's a different story altogether. I had to beat them to death with their own shoes. Nasty business, really. But, sure enough, I got the M&Ms, and Ozzy went on stage and did a great show."

You can also make the settlement surrender after a certain amount of turns.

Either wait for a relieving army to come to the rescue, starve them out, or (the best option) download RTR and MetroNaval.

I bypass the cities, and wait for my army of 3 xp axemen to arrive. I slaughter every field army so the axemen aren't caught in fight with, say, pikemen.

I used to be an agressive/defensive fighter too and I must say it's imo the easiest way to win a battle. Let the enemy come to you and tire themselves out while under constant bombardment of various missiles, a recipe for victory.
I just used one line of infantry with one reserve unit and cav. on both flanks backed by a second lie of archers and skirmishers. Just meet the enemy head on and try to flank with cav, won every battle to.
Then I started to experiment with different army setups like, strong right flank of heavy infantry to roll up the left enemy flank, strong center of 5 heavy units and the rest of the army lighter units to encircle, strong cav wing etc. but always on the defence.
Now I also try attacking and although my casualties are higher I really get a kick out of offensive battle, it's more hectic and when your battle plan works it feels like you really won the day. It might even be wise to be on the offensive if you are outnumbered, won a few spectacular victories that way.
I still prefer to fight on the defensive if I arive at a critical juction in my campaign though. I only play Mods now-a-days, it also makes the battle more interesting, gives more possibilities to manouvre during the battle.

Experimenting with different battleplans on both offence and defence makes the fights more interesting and the game more fun.

My favourite strategy is also something that could be called agressive/defensive. I usually find a location where I can easily hold position (brigdes, especially, I love them ) and let the enemy attack me, thus weakening his economy and not letting him develop, while I slowly build my kingdom and an offensive army. Then, when I estimate the time is right, I attack, either in a blitzkrieg manner, or a scorched-earth strategy, weakening the enemy even more. Once I manage to take his major cities, it's usually a over, even if he still has some teritories.
