Anybody have a Garmin GPS out there? Have you noticed when you connect it to your PC and check My Computer, it appears as a drive? I mean you can defrag it if you want. Anybody try this or recommend it? Will it screw up the unit?

Might be better to post/move this to the basement and why would you need to defrag a GPS?
defragging external devices is not the same as doing it on the PC, its a diffrent type of hard drive.
if you did it i doubt you would see any long term damage, i am willing to bet it wouldnt even work (i bet you click defrag and get an error message)
but i have a horrid feeling it would likly erase data on it so i say dont try it if anything important is on it.
Moved to the underground strip club.
Basement, that is.

Attempting to defragment a volume that's not formatted as some supported filesystem, say FAT32 or NTFS, will fail harmlessly. The option probably won't appear unless it has an appropriate filesystem, in fact (but you never know). In any case it's very unlikely that it will hurt to try.
