I'M BAAAAACCCCCKKKKKKK!
I have seen the movie 2 times at cinema. I own the special edition 2-disc DVD.
I also have the original Frank Miller comic of 300. And I own the post-production book which is made in same style as the comic book!
And yes, I'm a big fan of 300 ! LOL !
Another yes, thats one of the reasons i love XGM !
Have you seen the '50s movie version of the battle at Thermopylae? The movie was "The 300 Spartans", pretty good, more historically accurate than "300"...but that's not hard.
"300" was pretty awesome, it probably has the best choreographed violence I've ever seen.
If you read, you should try reading "Gates of Fire" by Steven Pressfield, one of my favorite historical novels. His take on the Spartan way of life and Thermopylae is great....

You are right on Balikedes! I first saw The 300 Spartans back about 1966. I requested a company that sold military movies to produce it way back about 1997. When I finally found it on DVD a few years ago I bought it immediately. My Son in Law liked it so much that he took it to Fort Benning for a few months. My grandson likes it too.
It was certainly a fine movie, much better than 300.
Steven Pressfield wrote Gates of Fire about ten years ago. George Clooney wanted to make a movie based on it. Gates of fire would have been excellent. I strongly recommend the book.

I bought that 1962´s "The 300 Spartans" DVD just recently in a bargain sale. There is this series called 20th Century Classics that include all sorts of older movies.
How about those other historical films from the 1950s and 1960s? Spartacus (directed by Stanley Kubrick), Ben Hur (featuring Charlton Heston), and Cleopatra (featuring Elisabeth Taylor & Richard Burton) are pretty interesting and entertaining to watch...

Well ive seen it lots of times and love the part when he yells "SPARTANS! Prepare for Glory."
Good thing the movie wasn't trying to achieve historical accuracy.
The Lord of the Rings was not trying to be historically accurate to history (duh!), it was accurate to the books.
In that same way, 300 was not trying to be accurate to history. It was accurate to the Graphic Novel (VERY accurate)
And yes, the Battle of Guagamela in Alexander was probably the most realistic ancient battle ever
There are no pacts between Lions and Men
It stayed pritty close. The Persians used Elephants there, they all died, the immortals were real, and so on... it was awsome at least.
They got the name right with Immortals, but that's all they got right about them. Somehow I doubt that they used Katanas....

hmm...
1 elephants were NOT used here
2 the persian fleet at the begining was not killd by a storm; it was killed by the fleet of Athens
3. the immortals were archer-spearmen, not ninjas
4firepot throwers were not around for another 800 years at least
5. Leonidas did NOT die last; he died in midbattle
6. The Oracle/priest guys did not say the "Carneia" crap; they stated roughly" in order for Greeks to win war, a spartan king was to die"
7. there were roughly erm 200000persians not 1million
8. no rhinos lol
9. the battle at Plataea was not against persians (this may be another battle correct me if wrong) they fought Plataeans.
10. there were more than just 300 spartans and a few dozen other greeks.
11.Xerxes was not a freako faggish wierdo. also his throne was positioned on the cliff overlooking the valley.
12. the immortals were not orcs, and there were no giant troll type guys
13. the immortals name derived from something else; if i am correct, there was always a standard army of 10000 of them, and they were replaced so quickly, it is as if they had respawned.
14. Gratuitous sex scene. (unnessecary)
15. there was no "Gollum"(that is what came to mind) "Hunchback of Notre Dame" guy.
many of these things were added for clear cinematic purposes, which i respect, but the film misinforms people and makes them feel know-it-all about nothing.
That bit was right.
I thought it was sufficiently unrealistic that most people would realize they weren't getting history. I'm more bothered by films that look realistic, and put on a veneer of historical accuracy, but then play fast and loose with the facts.many of these things were added for clear cinematic purposes, which i respect, but the film misinforms people and makes them feel know-it-all about nothing.
The point of 300 wasn't to be historically accurate, it was to be romanticized, as if ancient Greek storytellers were telling myths about the battle.
By the way, there were about 300 Spartans (give or take a few) and there were more than a few dozen other Greeks. Leonidas also didn't die mid-battle, he died in the middle of the battle on the last day.
"300" is a great movie for me.
So I still play "Spartan TW" almost everyday.
SPARTAN ... What is your profession?
AHOO... AHOO ... AHOO
Spartan TW? Do you have a link I might wanna check it out.
300 the movie is based on the comic book which is based LOOSELY on history. When I hear people (as well as by so called intellectuals at uni...)say the movie is unhistorical, unrealistic and what-not, I tend to point it out to them that it is a ACTION movie, not a historical documentary therefore a work of fiction. They can throw watever they want into it (except i might have some qualms if they chuck in the queen alien from Aliens..)as long as it looks good and appeal to the majority of the population.
For me, I just ignored all the inconsistencies and basically saw a nice, violent filled movie where men revelled in the glory of bloodletting. I even allowed myself a gasp of dismay (OH NOES! they all DIED? I thought for sure hollywood would show the 300 conquering Babylon...)
Balikedes: THANKS! That was the book title and author I read many years ago but couldnt remember the title nor the author. Now to buy the book and add it to my collection. =)

Do you know why most men die before their wives do? Because they want to!
Exactly !! If I go on IMDB.com and check out the messageboards, I always get sick of ppl telling that he movie is inaccurate in history terms, bla bla bla!!
ITS A MOVIE BASED UPON A COMIC WHICH IS BASED LOOSELY UPON HISTORY.
But a lot of facts are right in the movie ---> Spartan training from early age, etc. In a special featurette on the dvd a historian tells you about it.
I saw the 50's movie "The 300 Spartans" lying in a dvd shop near me. I knew it existed.....it inspired Frank Miller to draw it's "300" graphic novel. I have never watched it so I might buy this movie now too. And I will definately order that book! I believe the book "Gates of Fire" is also mentioned in the "300" comic. As another inspiration for Frank Miller.Have you seen the '50s movie version of the battle at Thermopylae? The movie was "The 300 Spartans", pretty good, more historically accurate than "300"...but that's not hard.
