Why am I not getting good performance? My vid card is great!

I have an 8800GTX, e6600 2.4 GHz C2D, 2GB Corsaid DDR2-800 RAM, X-Fi sound card, 680i mobo, but I get like 15-20 FPS with 4k units on the field at everything max except unit detail, which is at the second best detail at a resolution of 1680x1050.

15-20!

I did a clean install, but its still an extreme issue. The counter turns red when custom battle with more than 4000 units. I have the same problem in Oblivion, where I get 15FPS at max, and in the World in Conflict Demo, my friend with an AMD Athlon X2 4400 and an OCed 7900GT gets better framerate than me!

Those yield no results. My system is superior to most of the other posts. This isnt a no-vegetation shadows issue. I have vegetation shadows. I have AA off and Ansio at lowest setting, but not off. Yet, I get 15FPS. There is no reason for this. Especially after a fresh reformat and brand new drivers.

Dude, it's got nothing to do with your videocard. It's the dual core. Got the problem myself too (E6750 C2D).

The game uses the same portion of your CPU as pretty much every consumer program.

Despite what the ads may say, dual cores do not equal having two times the power; they are for multitasking,not brute-force processing (outside of specialised applications)

So your saying I'd get the same performance or worse with an intel core 2 duo than a pentium 4?

That's odd - I have an AMD 64 X2 6000+ which is nearly identical in the CPU charts. I run everything at max at 1680x1050 and I get 35-40fps. I have an 8800 Ultra, but they are only about 20% faster than the GTX's, not double.
With 3 full stack armies in a city I don't get any lag at all. (On large unit sizes, so about 4500 - 5000 men.

I did get a noticable difference when I installed AMD's dual core optimizer driver/patch - does Intel have something like that for the Core2's?

I can run up to 4000 men fine at 1x speed and 1680x1050, 2x Ansio and 0x AA.

I can run up to 6000 with 15FPS, which is barely manageable. More? sucks.

Plus. reinforcements dont arrive for more than 4000 people at a time.

Does anyone notice anything wrong in my dxdiag?

You could start the game, go back to desktop with [Alt]+[Tab] and disable one of the cores in the task manager.

Furthermore: get over it and accept the fact that the game runs like crap on today's high end machines...

What I never will understand is, why people tend to use such exaggerated screen resolutions. Why do you need to use 1680x1050? Does it really look that bad with 1200x800 for example?

Even on my brothers computer (don't know the specs, but it is a high end pc) I "only" play games on 1200x800, since everything above makes the text too small to read, and I don't think it looks so much better in higher resolutions (ok, 800x600 really sucks nowadays...)

I have to add, I am rather old (30) and grew up with the good old Commodore 64, so maybe I am not spoiled like the kids nowadays

What I try to say is, just lower your screen resolution a little bit, it will make the game run much smoother.

My computer has only 2 widescreen resolutions. 1680x900 or 1680x1050...

I WOULD be playing on 1440-900 if I could choose to. Anyway, I get only like 2FPS increase at 1280x1024

Running an LCD at anything but native resolution is madness

this game isnt optimized for dual cores, so you are only using 50% of your CPU power.

Potential power, yes. But you're still getting 100% of one core, as with most apps.

What are you running the background? (Antivirus, firewall, etc) All that adds up.

Also, latest drivers doesn't mean best drivers. Try different driver versions, and see if your card manufacturer has released drivers tailored to their cards.
