As far as performance goes, It depends on the rest of your system but removing 512mb of ram will most likely have a noticeable effect.

May I ask why you are removing ram?

Look at my Checkdisk thread in the Basement, I think I tracked down the cause of my hardware crashes to my faulty 2 256MB sticks that make up the .5 in my 1.5GB RAM. And also, my CPU is a 3.2 Ghz P4.
