    Default HD DVD

Just wondering if anybody here knows if you need a special burner/writer to burn HD DVD-R disks. Also, what is lightscribe?

I'm bogged down with work, so if anybody could shed some light on this it would save me loads of time researching it myself. Thanks

Don't know about your first question, but I'm guessing yes. It's laser is probably smaller, or it burns in a more compact manner. Either way though, you'll probably also have to have vista x64 bit... at least, that was what I heard a long time ago before vista came out. Its some kind of security feature, which only works on x64 bit os.

For the second question, lightscribe is the ability of the DVD burner to use its laser (or maybe a second laser) to burn words/pictures onto the DVD... without damaging it of course, hence the name lightscribe I guess.

I think it only does it in black, but its still cool.

Yes, only black. One of my Samsung drives have lightscribe. Does anyone know the cartridges at any point? (Or are you forced to buy a new one, bcuz I think laser cartridges for printers aren't even worth it, rather buy a new printer!)

for a HD-dvd disk you will need a HD burner/writer to get HD stuff on it, otherwise it will just be normal dvd quality

    Nope.

I just discovered that the only difference between them is capacity.

You can burn HD stuff onto normal DVD's but will only get 30mins of film... perfect for my projects.

But is it true that you have to have Vista x64 to play/burn them?

But when talking about HD-dvds, are you just talking about quality, or the actual "new" technology (as in HDdvd vs blue-ray).

HD is an image compression, sort of. It has more information per frame then standard NTSC or PAL. So, in theory, you should be able to easily burn a 1080i or 720p HD project onto any DVD using any DVD burner. But your capacity and burning time will be affected.

You'll probably want to compress your project in order to get it on the DVD. For example, I am doing an HD project right now 720p 59.94, it is 2:22 long and is a little over 6G in size, to big for a standard DVD unless its compressed. The trick is figuring out the best compression that works for you.
