Default Checkdisk is running everytime upon startup!

So Checkdisk is always running very long checks on my second hard drive since today upon startup. I've had the hard drive give me the fatal 'tock' and hard lock-up quite a few times during the past, though, but that's mostly because of my faulty video card and its artifacts.

EDIT: Well, it also may be of my 2 256MB sticks of my 1.5 GB of RAM. That 512MB doesn't make a difference in Medieval II, right?

How old is your hard disc?

That is not a good sign; back up all valuable data on the disc ASAP!

I removed the .5 GB of RAM from my PC and the locking up symptoms seemed to have stopped, still a lot of artifacts at the factory clock speed for my video card.

Check your error log, you will probably find an error like Bad Sector or MBR error. Back up everything you need to keep on it and then run the manufacturers health test on it. Most of them have tools on their websites.

RAM shouldnt cause that, though it will cause other problems if you mix and match brands and speeds.

Well, yeah, my two 256MB sticks were of a different brand (some crappy Samsung), but all the problems have ceased, except I still can't stop the Checkdisk on that hard drive and it's working perfectly loading up Medieval II.

Look closely on the RAM chips on anything, they're all made by Samsung. Even in my Nvidia video card, and my G.Skill RAM.

Something is wrong with that drive then. Rght click My Computer, select Manage, go to Event Viewer and see if you can find something in System about it.

I'd suggest a check also. Most recent HDs have SMART. If you can't find your mfg. tool, Speedfan has a SMART checker.

What filesystem is on the disk? FAT or NTFS? Do you shut down your computer properly, or just cut the power? It's probably malfunctioning, but it never hurts to check for the basics . . .
