Default PS3 problem. Help needed. Urgently.

I have a problem. Right out of the blue, my ps3 won't show anything at the screen when i start it up. The screen flickers once, then after a few seconds once again, and then nothing. It looks as if the machine works alright but i can't see anything. Wires are connected well and the machine was working only a few hours ago, quite normally.
Could it be from overheating? The base of the machine is quite hot. If anyone has had similar experiences(notice the screen flickering i mentioned above) and has found a way to solve the problem, short of returning the damned thing at Sony, please let me know. Thanks.

If it is from overheating them:

1: Put the PS3 in an horizontal position.

    2: Avoid tight spaces.

3: Make sure your PS3 is above a solid surface.

4: Make sure the back of the PS3 has substancial amount of space for a healthy air flux.

5: Did you use the PS3 for several hours while ignoring the above mentioned conditions or some of them?

If so, then it's an overheating problem. The probability goes more or less around 0.2%-0.4% of all purchases if you indeed put the PS3 under the above mentioned situations.

    I only bought it today

Haven't played for than 2 hours in total.

I have been having it placed horizontally.

Then you're facing a very rare probability, and I'm sorry to say this but that's some very bad luck you got there. EIther that or your model could have some production flaws, perhaps around the cable parts.

The probability or getting a PS3 overheating under those conditions is of about 0.2%, now the probability or getting your PS3 screwed in just two hours and following at least some of the security rules would be really but really low.

And please, let's not start with a PS3 bashing thread because of Giorgos case.

I can't believe this. I have had the ps3 unplugged and placed on a cool surface for more than 30 minutes and the damned thing is still burning up...
What's Sony's policy on the subject? Do they repair quickly and/or exchange consoles? Anyone knows?

@numerosdecimus: Thank you for your help so far.

Another question, when you first started using the PS3, was the environment or room you had put it in was already with a high temperature, with a low air circulation, kind of like how a small room with a computer gets after hours of having the PC on and without air circulation?

Try to avoid those places and try to fresh the room a little, if necessary get your AC on.

Oh damn, i feel stupid. That's what i get for not RTBM before usage. I had used an hdmi cable at a friends place and when i reverted back to my own tv later today, the ps3 was trying to find the 1080 screen as per its setup. I had to keep the power on button pressed for 5 seconds in order for it to revert back to its default settings.
    I feel so stupid.

Thanks for your help no10. + for you.

Lol, I also had one of those situations and it's not uncommon. The screen flickering was probably the PS3 system checking again and again, and finally after some attempts it would finally quit doing it.

By the way, if you used on a 1080i screen, was the image really impressive and clear? (I don't have an 1080 screen). They say you can only truly take advantage of the PS3 is when using a 1080 screen.

Don't feel bad. I camped outside Circuit City for 2 days, had my food taken there, actually slept for a couple of hours on a sleeping bag there, endured two morons who bought a ps3 just to break it infront of everyone, saw two geeks fight each other for no good reason, cought a cold, bought the dam thing only to know it did not worked...I swear that if I had someone infront of me I would have knocked his teeth out. i got so pissed of that I fainted. Or at least i thought i did, it could have been the stress and tiredness. I awoke 5 hours later got the blasted things recipt and went to try and change it for a new one. I finally curse myself for not buying the 360.

Ahaha I saw a video of someone doing that to a 360. I wanted one, but couldn't afford one at the time anyway, so I thought it was pretty funny.
