Byzantine players out there?

Playing on VH/VH how do your games go with 5.0? I'm still waiting on the Turks to jihad one of my cities and start an all out attack. It has yet to happen.

If you stay away from them they stay away from you , meaning if you expand into greece instead of asia minor they generally don't bother you until later and by that time the mongols come and they can't afford to F with you.

well i havn't got kingdoms yet but on 4.03 i tend to go for hungary and sicily, first allying with the venicians to hold back milan,i then try to take back the western half of the empire, i also try to build up rome enough to make it my capitol , its a much easier place to defend than constantinople, i tend to leave the turks to thier business taking a more defencive role in the east, trust me it somtimes takes a while, but once the turks do attack there relentless, unless the mongols expand south then they pretty much get decimated. i build constantinople, and nicaea as defensive stations for anything in the east. i usually take the east after the mongols have had thier fill of the turks

Taking Rome relatively early in the game? Does that virtually ensure non-stop war with the catholic nations?

And as for defensible position...I've always found Constantinople easy to defend...Use a navy to block the land bridge entries into Europe from Asia Minor. The Turks almost NEVER have a navy!

it only causes a major problem if u leave relations with the pope unsecured, i usually give them the island south of eurasia, with some defenses there to keep an eye on papal expansion, in exchange for a ceasefire alliance, giving land almost always secures an alliance, plus i try to keep my relations as good as posible before i invade to ensure, the whole world doesn't come after me, also i never really use my navy to block landbridges, it is a good strategy just never do it
