    Default Rebels versus Factions

I am now playing on VH/VH and was wondering if the normal Factions are tougher and more intelligent in the battles than the Rebels? Since playing with the VH/VH setting I get rebels attacking me but when it comes to the actual battle they do provide a challenge but are the proper Factions better?

I only ask this as I am yet to find out and at the rate I play its unlikely that I will find this out for many many more turns yet

I like to think that the answer is yes, but conformation of this would be good

I have alot of fighting with the Rebels to do for quite awhile in the Scottish Highlands so as for getting to the English soon, is pretty much a no go, not until I can accumalate enough money to support better units, I'm probably not doing certain things right to get more money coming in but thats a seperate issue and one I am trying to tackle

At the moment factions arent that agressive. Play your cards right and you can go entire games without being attacked.

Though, having said that, choose the wrong enemy, or anger the pope, and you shal feel his wrath! my HRE empire was decimated in only a few turns, when only a few years before i was winging it was "too easy".

In terms of individual battles, well, it depends on how compotent a general you are! Go for the throat, charge and kill their general, thats always my goal.

    Thanks headsh0ts,

Just come back from a pretty large battle with a full Rebel Stack and boy they fought, I did'nt have much luck controlling my army though, a few routed, and just as I thought the dis-mounted Knights Templar were strong they almost got wiped out completely!

I had way more archers but the rebels did suprisingly well, until I managed to rout them all at once, not sure how that happened as the battlefield was a mess, my units were all over the place and not in a nice order as I would like them to be, still who said battles were neat and tidy

I look forward to battling the proper factions, as I don't relish having to go entire games without being attacked, going for the general is something I will endeavour to do thanks for the tip, as I always try to get the enemy archers out of the way first, not always easy though, no matter how many I out number the enemy by.

I do keep on the right side of the pope if I can, although I don't take part in any crusades as of yet, not enough troops to do that, plus I don't like to leave settlements without any garrison or generals, maybe I should'nt worry about that but its how I have always played, old habits die hard

Always liked a game better if I win some and lose some battles, although thats not quite happened yet apart fom naval battles

    Cheers

well if you want a harder campaign maybe you can give yourself the house rule of only using half stacks even if they have full ones.

I loose some battles!!!! but I also get plenty heroic victories!!!!!!!!!!!

The factions are definitely better enemies than the rebels... Unless they are weakened to a point that they have very little production. Rebels are temporary annoyances, although they are beefed up in the beginning. The factions may attack multiple targets on the same turn and betray an alliance that you were counting on. Generally I would guess that when you are a small or mid level power you will be very impressed by the wars you face against the factions. Once you are an empire, you will probably have to resort to house rules to keep your game interesting. I, for example, do everything in my power to prevent a faction from being destroyed in the late game, including fighting wars on their behalf and granting them lands. That rule can backfire though, as it means that no other faction can grow into an equal empire to me by completely absorbing their enemies, and therefore I remain in a dominant position until the Mongols arrive. I'm sure that you'll figure out a way to keep your game fresh, but in the meantime enjoy that brutal faction on faction warfare that defines the mid-game, as that is where this mod really shines....

I believe someone has written why rebels are not attacking you and so not of a great burden, if I remembered it correctly it was Condottiere SOG. He can tell you how to do that.

ps he knows a lot about altering this game although as historian I do not agree with all of his supposed changes

Well as I moved from playing the English to the Scots I guess they would be considered a low power? anyway, I've just reached the 1100's and have taken 5 rebel settlements 2 over in Ireland but am yet to go into War with the English, but when I do it looks like I'll be in for a harder time, which will be nice, although the last battle with the rebels was quite close, percentage was something like 85% - 100% in my favour, it did'nt help that the weather was bad and I chose to wait the full 3 times, but then when I had to fight, it was dusk and I'd forgotten that it soon goes very dark and it made it tough to see what was going on unlike at night when your units have torches!!

I am not going to rush into fighting the other factions yet, I'll give the a long time to build up, I have seen one English Army with a full stack, near York but I'll let them be for now

At the beginning of the game, I generally find the factions less difficult than the rebels. Some of the rebel armies have 8-10 star generals running around, who can severely influence the outcome of a battle. The set factions are still running around trying to build their generals up, and are pretty weak from fighting rebels themselves.

The longer you wait, the tougher they will get, especially a solid 20-30 turns after mail becomes common.

this is another house rule I use, not to attack before 30 turns.

Makes the world a harder place!!!
