Eh, no, the color (bronze silver gold) merely represents the stage of armor. For instance padded armor, or full armor, etc. So you can go from 4 armor to 12 armor in one upgrade. In M2TW vanilla also there was a bug that although this worked properly in-game, the display only said it went from 4 to 5 armor.

i dont think he's talking about the armor upgrades, but the 'rank' upgrades through experience.
