I save before the end of every turn, and also before every battle.
I save the turns and the battles to scratch files (e.g., Gauls_A, Gauls_B, etc.) THe reason I save before battles it two-fold:
1.) I have a faimily; and sometimes family duties require me to shut down my game; and that often occurs in the middle of a battle, losing all result to that point. It is nice to at least be able to start at that battle, instead of having to replay the entire turn.
2.) Sometimes, for obvious battles, I will autoresolve. Sometimes I get flakey results, like losing 240 archers and my general in the midst of my 1040 men taking a village with a wooden palisade away from 160 defenders. :hmmm: Purists be damned: I am playing that one over...
About every other turn, I will save to a unique file name like, "Gaul_VH_VH_BC203w," and start reusing the scratch files. That way I have a running history of the game:
Gaul_VH_VH_BC203w
Gaul_VH_VH_BC204w
Gaul_VH_VH_BC205s
...so I can go back and see something if I have a question.

Hi
As the campaign matures the turns take longer. Days sometimes before I move on a turn. I save at the end of each playing session, before major battles, and at the end and start of every turn.
In my current campaign I have 6 saves for my last turn, 3 for the turn before that, 6 the turn before that.
I accept battle results no matter the outcome. I accept ambushes and surprise campaign moves. I dont accept my clumsy keystrokes moving on the campaign map nor game crashes.

I save constantly, but I never reload saves after bad battle results or anything.
I think what Severous means is that it takes him days to complete a single game turn.
I can say, from personal experience in succession campaigns, that he is a very meticulous player. It is not for nothing that he does this: He achieves results at which the casual player can only marvel (e.g., IIRC, winning a long campaign as Egypt on VH/VH in about 40 turns).
Hi
Noble Nick describes it right. It can take me a few calender days to advance a turn. I work long days, have a commute, so have a few hours of play each evening. Thats not enough to micromange all aspects of the game and fight battle on all fronts and play many turns.
Plus I read the best RTW forums... which takes a while.

I do a regular save every few turns (sometimes every turn later in the game), but I quicksave ALL THE TIME. I don't even think about it anymore. When I'm thinking about what to do, or scrolling to another part of the map, it's just natural for me to press "Ctrl + S".
I generally save at the end of a playing session and thats it unless I'm playing a buggy mod then I do it before and after I end turns.
Same. I'll play for eight or nine turns then call it a day and save. Then again, I haven't played in over a month and never do during the school year, but I still find it an effecient saving method. If I ever needed to conserve space I'd overwrite one of the original saves for that campaign.
And my file name format (for anybody interested)
(Faction Name) (Year)(s/w)
I quicksave all the time, it's easy to load and easy to save. I admit defeats on the campaign map, but my mod makes computer crashes happen (I'm playing the SPQR). So I'm pretty tired of the game shutting down every time, sometimes in the midst of a battle. So I save constantly, but I admit defeats.
I always forget to save with RS, until I'm ending my playing for that session.
I really should get better at that, I used to have 4-5 different save files.
I don't reload and try again though.![]()
I should join a Succession campaign some time.
I save before the end of every turn, and also before every battle.
I quick save after every action. This may be a starting a building or something simpler. I know it's irrational as my previous quick save was just saved over, but hey it's habit.

Yea, when you've started quicksaving you can't stop. It's not a problem, so why change the habit?
Every 17 seconds
I Quicksave before every battle, since you never know when the game is going to decide to make your reinforcements AI controlled even though you told it not to, or crash on you (I used to use a buggy mod that often crashed when loading a battle). I make a regular save once every turn or two.
