    Default Merchants?

I haven't heard much about merchants in BC. Are they the same as 'nilla, changed, or are you guys even using them?

Pretty much the same. We use GrandViz's settings so the make a bit more dough. I haven't looked at merchants much at all for BC 1.0 to be honest - too many other things to do. But I will definitely try to find better ways to "train" and use them in the future.

To be honest, merchants are no big factor in my games. I've survived and conquered without 'em. The merchant "war" gets boring imo. The only way they came to handy is when you get to the americas in vanilla.
I hope the effect of merchants and merchant trade are doubled in BC

Unless you get Timbuktu. Right now I have 6000+ income flowing out of my merchants there.

I use merchants a lot. If one can break even in a few turns, its well worth it!

Well not all factions have such a luxury(I.e Armenia)in BC as to be able to consolidate their position like that. Especially if your suicidal enough to crank it up to VH/VH like some of our more hardcore TW players. I'd like to see you build just roads and markets when the Turks and Franks come a knocking.

i tried that with the byzies in vanilla. Just building roads and trade stuff, guess what, venice raped me. They raped me bigtime. And all those trade buildings got raped aswell, when they sacked my "developed" cities, which i couldnt defend.

My order of building stuff with a new/undeveloped settlement is usually religious building-road-whatever military building would be wisest-market, then I just go from there with whatever I need.
