Icon14 How to Hide an Airplane Factory

During World War II the Army Corps of Engineers needed to hide the Lockheed Burbank Aircraft Plant to protect it from a Japanese air attack. They covered it with camouflage netting and trompe l'oeil -art technique involving extremely realistic imagery in order to create the optical illusion that the depicted objects really exist, instead of being mere, two-dimensional paintings - to make it look like a rural subdivision from the air.

Where was this Aircraft Plant if they needed to camouflage it?

Probably on the coast, never, no matter how many allies the Japanese had, could ever have had attacked the heart of America.

    And Yay! Condell's back!

They did this at factories all up and down the Pacific coast. I know for a fact they did at the Boeing factories in Seattle too.

Wouldn't it be hard for the planes (especially the bigger ones) to traverse through all those poles?

Yeah, but what if there was an air raid?

They'll be in the air the moment the attack is over

It is a factory, it generally is not used as a fighterbase(I think). Also the point of the camouflage is to conceal it from an air raid. It might look kind of silly to see a squadron of fighters coming out from a rural subdivision.

Whoa, awesome! Now think of this the next time you walk over a field, you might fall into a factory.

At the Longbridge plant in Birmingham they grew grass on the roof. Unfortunately, the factory was surrounded by workers' houses so it wasn't hard to work out where it was. There's still bomb craters all round that part of the city
