    Default Is second-hand smoke harmful?

Just watched the South Park episode where the boys smoke, which got me thinking: IS second-hand smoke harmful?

There are tons of reports that say it is, and tons that say it isn't. Interested in your opinions.

Apparently so I'm a smoker so I'm slightly biased but I have yet to read a conclusive report on the subject but I'm sure some more enlightened members will try and persuade me otherwise.

    A DIRTY, FILTHY SMOKER!!!!!! j/k

Everyone is biased. I'm biased because I grew up with parents that would crucify me if I even touched a cigarette. Still, I'm never going to smoke, because I know the dangers.

In Australia, smoking is pretty much banned in every public place. So even if second-hand smoke poses a risk, it's unlikely to harm me.

How dare you smoke?!?! My future wife might have children some day!

I don't smoke myself but I don't really think second hand smoke damages your health that much.

I suspect if you're breathing it in every day it could be damaging to your lungs.

Yeah, it's really harmful. My dad used to smoke, just quit. My friends used to smoke, my girlfriend used to smoke, she quit also. And I smoked briefly. Less than one year. It's a pain in the ass trying to run a lap after a long summers break of that.

I've read that it's almost the same as smoking first hand.
Somewhere else, on TV, I heard that it's worse, which I can't really immagine, maybe just as bad as smoking yourself.

Even if it isn't, the smell is unbearable and you should ashamed of reeking of it.

I doubt it's more harmful than the polluted air that you breathe every day if you live in a city with more than 100 000 inhabitants.

the simple answer is yes, you can debate all you want that you get lower levels but really thats like saying self harming isn't dangerous compared to full on stabbing yourself.

i have nothing against smokers having been one myself but its pointless to deny facts

it depends - if the smoke can not escape and can not ventilate with the outside air, like inside a building then it can be harmful, very harmful if large enough quantites of it gather, but even a little can be harmful to children and asthma suffers.

outside where there is plenty of ventilation, its ok

I'd say it's harmful if your genes make it so. My biological family can chain smoke like steam-engines in a forest fire for up to 50 years without ill-effect.....and not go bald either, and drink alcohol and smoke bongs on top of that if they so desire, and still live to the average national lifespan or longer.

I have smoked for 20 years and a recent medical examination confirmed that my lung capacity is still above the average/mean for a male of my age and height. Go figure.

But by the same token, I know people who have never smoked, never worked in a smoky environment, who have developed lung cancer in their early 40s. And the entire clan gets serious illnesses and generally die by 60.

    Genetics, people.

That South Park episode is out of date (and overwhelmingly biased). Scientific study now suggests that second-hand smoke is harmful.

Even if it aint it's enough that the damned nicotine stink from those filthy cancer sticks absolutely refuses to go away. If there's some ******* smoking somewhere I'll notice in a minute that my clothes smell like ****.

Why would anyone smoke!? Why not just burn away your money and start drinking water from the sewers?
Sorry you smokers but to me it seems that only a real idiot would smoke, you're buying all kinds of diseases.

LOL buy some aromatic perfume, or hang around someone who smokes aromatic purple pipe tobacco. Or alternatively, request that fireplaces be banned, and cars, and petrol.

    Why would anyone smoke!?
    I enjoy a smoke, frankly.

Huh? Sewer water? I don't even drink tap water.

Tell me that when you're old and on your death bed, and I'm even older and not on mine

I would rather give up drinking than smoking, seeing that it takes years to develop cancer while alcohol can kill you in a night.

Drinkin is much better than smoking, your eyes don't start to feel like they're being lit on fire when everyone in the room is drinking.

Call me crazy, but I just don't get the appeal of smoking.

What's it supposed to do for you again?
