Try using a registry cleaner just in case you did miss something for starters, it is possible.

Have tried restoring the whole system (computer) to an earlier date when you did not have this problem?

I cannot make the restoration because it is beyond 3 months ago… and cannot format

I'm not sure what your problem is. Does your computer think that M2TW 1.2 is already installed and that's why M2TW 1.0 (vanilla version from DVD) cannot be installed? And there is no "Medieval II Total War" on your computer (any longer), neither on the add/remove programs list in the control panel, as a (rather empty) folder left where you installed it before nor as a registry entry somewhere? And this after that you have used the search function on your computer in an attempt to find any file with that name, used a better application removal program (like Add/Remove Plus!) or used some registry editor?
When I get computer problems that seem unsurmountable, giving my technical limitations, I always resort to reinstalling the whole system, Windows and everything, so that everything is in pristine conditiion once again. Have not found a problem that couldn't be solved in this way. But it's a solution that takes the best part of the day to finish. Sometimes one has no choice than to bite the bitter apple.

Have you tried just running the uninstaller for M2TW (I know it's the obvious thing, but I want to check) again?
Have you tried running the installer manually from the CD (Not the autostart mini menu, but gone into the cd and ran setup).
Have you tried add/remove programs from windows control panel?
If after that it still detects M2TW there is a registry entry present still. Try downloading regcleaner (it's a free program) and running a deep scan (or whatever it is called), and deleting anything relating to M2TW it turns up. Heck, you could even try downloading Spybot Search and Destroy, turning on advanced mode and scanning system internals.

for my difficulty you could use a translator in Italian?

Good news: with the reg cleaner I have found medieval 2 and I have given to it disinstalla and now as I insert the cd says to me installs and not disinstalla; now I must find the way to remove the 1.2

So you have managed to uninstall M2TW 1.0 but still can't install M2TW 1.0?

That sounds odd. Click "Start" and then "Run" on your computer. In the dialogue box that opens up now, type "regedit" (without quotation marks) in the field there, then click OK. Now Windows' own registry editor should open up. In the list which you see to the left, click on the "+" next to the folder called "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE". A list of subfolders opens up. Click on the "+" next to the one called "SOFTWARE". If you find a SEGA folder inside, click on the "+" next to it. What folders do you see here? If you still have a "Medieval II Total War" folder there, what are the names of the folders inside it?

@ Milite - I'm not sure I understood you there (do you have friend who can help you a little with the English?). Did you try to do like I explained in order to see if there's still some "Medieval II Total War 1.2" on your computer?

@ Dandy - you need to explain more in detail what you did before the CTD occurred. But try the following first: download the latest patch for the game from www.totalwar.com, and install it over the Medieval II Total War folder. If the problem persists, read the answers in other threads about this problem, and if that doesn't help you, then come back in one of those threads or, if you feel your problem is very different, in a new thread of your own.

Why can't you reformat the whole computer (use a "Product Recovery DVD" or similar)?

Milite, if you can reinstall the Windows system (XP or Vista) in your computer och thereby create a clean and fresh environment (including a new registry) for your programs you will solve your problem. Other than that, I know too little of your situation etc to be able to help you.
