The Germanic Question: Hope For a Crap Faction?

I consider there to be 4-5 "Crap" Factions when it comes to online battles:
1) Thrace
2) Greek City-States (who aren't in the tourney)
3) Germania
4) Gaul
5) Spain

In preparation of the upcoming Four Minnows Tournament (Sept.9), I've been practicing with the German faction. Are they my favorite crap faction? No, I actually prefer Thrace over Germania. (glory to the heirs of Alexander!) But I'm assuming I won't be able to use Thrace for all of my battles; thus the Germans will be my benchwarmers on Sunday.

However, I have been fairly successful with the Germans over the past few days. Starting on September 5, I embarked on a quest to get comfortable with the Germans online. This is what my battles looked like over the past few days:

(just ignore the battles where I used the Macedonians, Thracians, etc)

For all of my Germanic battles, I used these settings:
1) 10,000 denarii
2) Season: Winter
3) Map: Grassy Flatland
4) No Rules

As you can see, I used the Germans 14 times from September 5 till September 8. During that time, I won 13 battles and lost 1 battle (as the Germans).

I'll let you see the results from each battle. For a few of the battles, I've provided the composition of my opponents' armies:

My Macedonian opponent (TheDukko) used this army against me:
- 1 General's Armoured Bodyguard (plus general)
- 2 Companion Cavalry
- 1 Light Lancer
- 8 Royal Pikemen
- 1 Cretan Archer
- 3 Archers

My Roman opponent (Sertorius) used this army against me:
- 7 Legionary Cohorts (plus general)
- 6 Legionary Cavalry

My Greek City-State opponent (_AKINCILAR_|||||BATTAL|||||) used this army against me:
- 6 Spartan Hoplites (plus general)

Battle 488: Germania vs Pontus


Battle 489: Germania vs Rome


Battle 490: Germania vs Carthage


My Carthaginian opponent (Marcus_Aurelius) used this army against me:
- 6 Sacred Band Spearmen (plus general)
- 5 Poeni Infantry
- 5 Town Militia
- 3 Numidian Mercenaries

Battle 491: Germania vs Rome


My Roman opponent (QuintoTheTerrible) used this army against me:
- 4 Praetorian Cavalry (plus general)
- 6 Urban Cohorts
- 1 Archer Auxilia
- 5 Roman Archers

Battle 492: Germania vs Seleucids


Battle 495: Germania vs Rome


My Roman opponent (|FF|Rage) used this army against me:
- 8 Urban Cohorts (plus general)
- 11 Roman Archers
- 1 Triarii

So, I was successful against these opponents (with the exception of AKINCILAR who trounced me). So my question: is there hope for crap factions online? Or are they doomed to lose every battle they partake in?

If i could vote, i would vote for Germania. I love their mix of phalanxes (which aren't that bad), Berserkers and Gothic Cavalry.

I also like Germania best out of the "crap" factions. They have good cavalry and fast infantry with some nice archers. But one question. Numidia ain't that good online either. Many don't use them, and I think that may would loose if they ever would.

I agree that Numidia isn't that great, but at "no rules," they're awesome

On the other hand, Thrace might be just as good as Numidia. So I might've contradicted myself there. lol

I have a few replays where the Numidians just destroy me. And if I do beat them, it's really really close...

EDIT: Whoever asked me why I change my name so much, here's the first/foremost reason: whenever I experiment with different factions/tactics, I always change my name. I feel that the restraints of being called the "Prince_of_Macedon" constricts me to the Macedonians. Without such constraints, I'm free to use whoever I wish (and do whatever I want in general).

GREECE is best...of those here, no doubt

They have GREAT hoplites, good archers and if u do good tactic with them u cant lose with heroic.

But have you ever won a heroic victory? That's something hard with the greeks, even if you win, you often not win that big (I don't at least ). Therefor I still like the macedonians, with the right tactics you can crush the enemies.

sure i did but this was against much better opoonents. i have heroics too but it is aganst oponnents who are not good as these up here:



i have others but it is against beeginers so i wont post them, yes it is hard to get heroic with greeks....

I've seen "noobs" use a variety of tactics. But that doesn't mean I should hate the tactic. All tactics work under certain circumstances (even the noob box).

I voted germania, greece is shortly followed. Germania has alot of potential, it's unit rooster has a very good mix, their infatry make good shock troops and their archers are some of the best aswell as gothic cavalry being decent. The only problem is that Germania can't hold a defense aswell as other factions, no barbarian faction can imo besides thrace because lack of armour.

I believe Germania loses quite alot becasue of either A. poor troop choice chosen by the player, or B. the rely to much on besekers and play recklessly. A german army used right can be deadly, you can't expect a beserker to charge head first into a phalanx line as i've seen to many people do in the few games i've played.

Greece is played much more often then any of the factions listed yet the only few i've been beaten by is people useing a noob box I never have enough firepower to deal with it, unluckyness where my anvil breaks before the hammer is brought down. Or I can't get my cav into position because the whole enemy line isn't engaged and trying to move my cav around ends with them being shot though I've only ever had this problem once, so I played him again with romans, same tactic just more infatry to boot, maybe I could play your greeks tomorrow leonidas, my cpu is fixed
