Hi,
I have just completed reading the book "On War" by Carl von Clausewitz. For those people who don't know Clausewitz or the book:
He was a prussian general and wrote the book about 1826-1830. It's about strategy and war theory - and quite difficult stuff.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/On_War
In his book Clausewitz writes among others things about casulties an attacker suffers when he advances into enemy territory, even if he don't have to fight because the defender retreats. This casulties are due to sickness, physical exhaustions, hunger, and such things.
For the attacker it's much more difficult to treat this problems and supply himself as it is for the defender, because he isn't "at home" on the enemy territory. The people who live there are very likely against him and he has long and vulnerable supply lines.
Therefore Clausewitz says that retreat in the inner country is a strong strategy against an invasor.
(Examples for that are Russia against Napoleon Bonaparte or against Germany in WW2).
Therefore I got the idea to implement this as a mod. Let's say an army in MTW2 should suffer casulties every turn they are on enemy territory or on territory where they don't have military access.
The casulties should be as high as the casulties suffered by the defender when a city is besieged.
I have to say though that especially these casulties in a siege a quite unrealistic, I think. Why should the defender in a city suffer casulties as long as he has supplies ?
In my oppinion he is in a much more comfortable position than the attacker.
But anyway....in the strategy game "Europa Universalis III" exactly these casulties of an attacker on enemy territory are implemented. And it works quite well there.
Therefore I think it would be a good idea in MTW2, too.
I'm unfortunately not a modder though. I write this only as a suggestion. Maybe someone is interested.
Greetings,
Amaris
