I never autoresolve battles. First, because I enjoy them, and second, the outcome can be quite unexpected, with higher loses then necessary.

I fight most battles manually. About 90% I guess.
But there are good reasons to let the AI fight.

At first it's quite boring to command 1000 elite troops against 120 rebels.
But much more important....my computer is not the newest one, which means very huge battles can be quite slow - i.e. against the mongols. Those battles I let handle the AI.
(Unfortunately this means also that Empire: Total War probably won't run on my system )

I find these to be the most rewarding.

I like to grin evily and see how fast I can break the troops. I try to make it so I break them before I even make first contact.

In this case split your army and attack them with the force that gives you about 1:1 odds. You will have interesting little battle, and you'll pick up some good traits for your general and maybe some chevrons for the unit(s).

That's the best part.

Killing peasants that come onto your lands. Disrespect. The enemy thinks all they have to bring are peasants.
