Default Do ATI cards have problems with many games, such as Bioshock?

Has anyone noticed problems with X1950XT GPU while playing Bioshock, because I'm having untold problems with it on STALKER. Namely, it crashes after a few minutes of gameplay no matter what the settings and I've heard that a lot of ATI users are having similar problems. Can anyone tell me whether there are many games that have issues with ATI? Because if there are, then I wish I'd stuck with Nvidia! Trouble is, nearly every forum I visited recommended the X1950XT!

Firstly, it would be helpful if you kept all the problems together in one place. Mentioning you have trouble with other games such as FEAR and M2TW here might help to find a fix.

The fact it crashes after a few minutes of gameplay suggests a issue, and not necessarily with the graphics card. It could be CPU as well, maybe.

It's only STALKER that I've having a major problem with. I haven't noticed any in graphically intensive games such as Oblivion, Silent Hunter 4, or numerous older games. If there was a problem with the card or any other piece of hardware, surely I'd be having problems across the board?

My x1950xt is dying from Bioshock, it's a brand new card too.
Started out playing Bioshock fine on the highest (directx 9) settings, but the performance got steadily worse and now the card is ****.

The fact you were able to play on high and that you cannot now suggests something has changed in your system.

You've had trouble with 3 games. If you can play the most graphically intensive games fine, it could be another component that's the trouble. Check the CPU temps.

    How do I do that?

Ok, I'm pleased to report that I've made some considerable progress. I uninstalled the game and reinstalled once again, but this time, I only installed the first patch, with the same results. However, when I added an earlier version of Float32 to STALKER with the first patch, the freezing problem seems to have completely vanished (touch wood). So, it would appear that the latest patch was having quite a say with how STALKER was working on my system, wouldn't you say? A ridiculous situation, I thought patches were supposed to improve games, without crippling them in the process! The only trouble is, now I can't run with dynamic lighting as the FPS is far too low and I'm wary about installing the third patch (I'm not touching the fourth one again) in case it messes the game up again. Are there any other ATI users out there who have found that patch 4 has messed their game up?
If anyone else was having this problem, try rolling back to the first patch and an earlier (I think I used 1_5267) version of Float32, whether you're running dynamic lighting or not.

Now I've got the game working, do you guys think it'll be safe to try patch 3? After all, surely I'll be able to roll back to patch 1 again, just in case?

    Thanks for all your help.

Nothing has changed in my system, except the performance of the card, it's that simply. This is the second Ati x1950 to die on me in a few weeks.

Last time I buy an Ati, which is something I'd never thought I'd say as I'm not into fanboyism.

Its probably not worth pointing the finger at ATI unless they manufactured your card specifically.

Probaly not, next time I buy ATI...I'll stick with Asus, and stay away from PowerColour. (Next time I buy Ati will be when they bring an actual top of the line card, there last offering just didn't cut it in terms of price Versus performance ).
