    Default Data folder in my bad books

    The unpacked 1.2 files in the data folder (only that folder, all other folder even the ones inside data) don't work!! they don't stuff up the game or anything, but when I edit them, nothing happens... at all. The files are definitely saved and the things I've changed make sense, or so I believe

    eg. in descr_sm_buildings.txt I change

    recruit_pool "Skythikon" 1 0.5 3 0 requires factions { byzantium, }
    to
    recruit_pool "Skythikon" 1 0.5 3 0 requires factions { milan, }
    completely random I know but it should work shouldn't it?

    first off, if you're going to ask a question, you're more likely to get a response if you put it in the right forum. ie not this one which is for tutorials.

    To get the game to read the unpacked files and not the pack you need to change your config file and/or make a modfolder see this thread for starters
    http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showthread.php?t=70942

    To make a new faction able to recruit the units you would also need to give them ownership of the unit in export_descr_unit.txt
    armour_ug_levels 0, 1
    armour_ug_models Skythikon, Skythikon_ug1
    ownership byzantium, slave
    era 0 byzantium
    eg that bit, to get them to work in battle you'd need to add an entry for that faction for the unit in /data/unit_models/battle_models.modeldb file

    all the information is around here if you read the tutorials and stickies rather than trying random changes.

    You need to add:

    [io]
    file_first = true

    to the medieval 2 config file and make it read only.

    you can actually open it with notepad or similar text editor - you just have to tell your computer specifically to use that program, as it won't recognise the file extension.

    It is a horrible file though, various people have made formatted versions, see:
    http://www.twcenter.net/forums/downl...o=file&id=1180
    for one, that makes it a bit clearer to understand. Look for adding units tutorials for more explanation.
