    Default Job: Temple Descriptions

    Temple Descriptions

Descriptions of the temple types are given in xgm/data/text/export_buildings.txt. Factions always have suitable descriptions for the temples that they can build from scratch, but often when they upgrade the temples of other cultures, the names and descriptions they get are less than ideal. For example, when the Carthaginians upgrade temples, they often get stuck with the Greek deity names and descriptions for that temple type. What we need is new deity names and descriptions to fill in the blanks.

Ideally this would be a job for someone with an interest in ancient religions and a little skill in modding text files, who could work on the export_buildings.txt directly. failing that, you can use this thread to post new deity names and descriptions. Posts should include:

-The culture group or specific faction that the new description is for (i.e. Romans, Carthaginians, Eastern, etc).
-The temple type that the new description is for (i.e. leadership, trade, forge, etc).
    -The name of the god.
-A proposed description. This is the most important bit.

Descriptions do not have to be long, but they should be interesting, and include more than just the name of the god and its primary attributes. Try to include something interesting about the mythology of the deity, the manner in which the deity was worshiped, or the way in which the deity was depicted, and try to imitate the style of the existing temple descriptions.

Here is an example to work from:

    Culture:Greek factions
    Temple: temple_of_forge
    Name: Hephaestus
Description: This Shrine is dedicated to Hephaestus, the lame God of Metalworkers and Smiths. In this aspect he is celebrated for his weapon-making skills. These are considerable, and it is Hephaestus who made the arms and armour for all the great heroes, including the Shield of Achilles.

    Adding New Descriptions.

To add the new descriptions into the game only one file needs to be modified: export_buildings.txt. Each temple type has up to five levels. Each level needs a generic set of descriptions, and then specific descriptions for each culture or faction. Here's an example of one level:

    Code:
    ¬--------------

¬These are the generic/default descriptions used if there are no culture or faction descriptions.

    {temple_of_battle_shrine}	Shrine to Ares

Hebeleyzis is a particularly belligerent at striking down enemies, making him a worthy god for a fighting people.\n\nReligion also makes a people feel happy and content to know that the Gods are honoured. \n\nThe Shrine can be improved as the settlement grows in size and importance.

The game looks for faction specific descriptions first, then culture specific descriptions, and finally, if it can't find either of those then it uses the generic descriptions.

The valid culture types are: barbarian, carthage, eastern, egyptian, greek, roman. Note that "carthage" is the culture name used in this file - "carthaginian" is not valid, and as far as I know there is no faction specific name for Carthage that can be used in this file.

The valid faction names are: romans_julii, romans_brutii (GCS rebels), romans_scipii (Roman rebels), slavs (Ind. Gauls), macedon, egypt, seleucid, parthia, pontus, gauls, germans, britons (Baktria), armenia, dacia (Saba), greek_cities, numidia (Carthage rebels), scythia, spain (Iberians), thrace.

For the current list of temple descriptions we will need descriptions for: generic, barbarian (used for gauls, and ind. gauls), germans, spain, scythia, thrace, carthage (used for carthage and numidia), egytptian (used for egypt), eastern (I think this should be used for armenia), pontus, saba, parthia, greek (used for greek_cities, romans_brutii, macedon, and seleucid), slavs, and roman (used for romans_julii, and romans_scipii).

The code "\n\n" is used for paragraph breaks.

Bendis would be better as it is now - for weapons upgrades since she was goddes of the hunt among other job descriptions. for farming would be better the great mother Cybella (sp?)
The thracian Hero could be for leadership or battle... good work though!

Here are some ideas for the temple descriptions that I´ve been thinking.

    -----------------------------------------------------------------

    Culture: Roman
    Temple:
    Name: JANUS
Description: This Temple is dedicated to Janus, the double-faced god of beginnings and endings, the protector of gates and doors . As the first king of Latium he also represents the transition between primitive life and civilization, between the countryside and the city, peace and war, and the growing-up of young people. In times of peace the gates of his temple are closed, but in the times of war the gates are kept open so Janus will be ready to intervene when necessary.

    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    Culture: Ptolemies
    Temple: temple of leadership
    Name: SERAPIS
Description: This Temple is dedicated to Serapis, a god that combines the old Egyptian aspects of Osiris and sacred bull Apis and the new Greek elements. Serapis was also seen as a supreme god of divine majesty and the sun (Zeus and Helios), fertility (Dionysos), the underworld and afterlife, as well as healing (Hades and Asklepius).

(possibly temple of one god because Serapis was rather large mix of various Greeks and Egyptian gods; suitable for the Ptolemaic religion policy).

    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Culture: Armenia
    Temple:
    Name: MEHER
Description: This Temple is dedicated to Meher, an ancient god better known as Indo-Iranian Mithra. Meher is a protector of truth and justice.

(This is rather complicated god with a long history; the earliest known occurrence of the name Mitra is in a treaty inscription, ca. 1400 BC, established between the Hittites and the Hurrian kingdom of the Mitanni in the area southeast of Lake Van. )

    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Some proposals for the GALLIC TEMPLES:

BELENUS - a popular deity, particular in Italy, Noricum (Switzerland and Austria) and Gaul (France). The Romans equated Belenus with the Greek/Roman god Apollo who was also the god of light and healing.

OGMIOS - a god known for his strength. The Romans identified Ogmios as Hercules , wearing a cloak made of lion's hide, carrying a club and bow; also appeared as an old man who was followed by a crowd with their ears attached to his mouth by a golden chain. This was to indicate he was the god of eloquence, keeping the crowd spellbound with his oratory.

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Finally I´ve been thinking that it could be a good idea if the Temple of Artemis was build at some level at Ephesus (the settlement) when the player starts his Seleucid campaign. Then there wouldn´t be that contradiction with Wonders of the World. If the Seleucids had the Temple of Artemis, then maybe the Greek City States could have the Temple of Hephaestus.

Also if we believe the official propaganda of the Seleucid Empire and Seleucus I Nicator was indeed the son of Apollo, then I think it could be a good idea, if the Seleucids have the Temple of Apollo especially in Antioch.

    That´s all, folks!..

    Temple: temple_of_violence
    Name: Erinyes
Description: This Shrine is dedicated to Erinyes, female personifications of vengeance. Their eyes dripped with blood, and their whole appearance was horrific and appalling. Sometimes they had the wings of a bat or bird, or the body of a dog. The Erinyes might also be recognized as Semnai ("the venerable ones"), the Potniae ("the Awful Ones"), the Maniae ("the Madnesses") and the Praxidikae ("the Vengeful Ones"). Romans are called them the Furies.

Politically, all Senate meetings relating to foreign war were conducted in the Templum Bellonae (Temple of Bellona) on the Collis Capitolinus outside the pomerium.

    Name: Zalmoxis
Description: This Shrine is dedicated to Zalmoxis, legendary social and religious reformer, regarded as the only true god by the Thracian Dacians. Legend say that he traveled to Egypt and brought the people mystic knowledge about the immortality of the soul, teaching them that they would pass at death to a certain place where they would enjoy all possible blessings for all eternity. According to Herodotus, the Getae, who believed in the immortality of the soul, looked upon death merely as going to Zalmoxis, as they knew the way to become immortals.
