Default For Ireland! A Brittania AAR

Well, in order to steal Dahir's status as the only writer of a Brittania campaign AAR, I've decided to write one, as the title states, about Ireland.

House Rules: No cheating. I've changed this from my last AAR. I recently developed the skill to do so.

I will only fight a battle myself if a general is present, and even then not all of them.

My main unit tends to be the Ostmen, until I get the Ulster Swordsmen, so get used to seeing a lot of them.

This will be an "in-character" AAR, as opposed to an only gameplay AAR.

Sometimes, in order to do cinematic things, I'll use the custom battle. If I have a general in the scene, he will, obviously, be a captain. Ignore this please.

First installment after the first ten turns!

CHRONICLES OF THE EMPIRE OF IRELAND

    Year of Our Lord 1258

Greetings to whomever may find this journal having wandered into their possession! I am Mahon MacArthur, after my father Arthur the Brave. I am a member of the guard of King Brian, and as such shall record the deeds of his family along with mine in this journal. My family has been bound to the service of the Irish kings for many generations, since before the time of my great-great-great-grandfather. We have served the realm honourably for over two hundred years, and the tradition, God willing, will hold for many hundreds more. Before, King Brian was but the leader of a petty duchy in Northwestern Ireland, and now he is king of the whole Realm, although it comes to him in great peril.

King Brian, King of Christian Ireland

Prince Domnall, Prince of Christian Ireland

I am also, as well as being the guard to the king and his favorite servant, the handler of all Royal Dispatches, as well as those being sent to the King. Because of this, my journal shall contain a wealth of information pertaining to the Kingdom of Ireland.

On a mission from the King himself, our spies have infiltrated Dublin and Trim, and can easily provide us with accurate information on both of these settlements. However, King Brian has not placed the utmost importance on the capture of these lands, and desires first to capture Athenry, the westernmost outpost of the Kingdom of England in Ireland. Prince Domnall has been given this most important task, and although it shall be years before we are ready to stage an assault, he is very eager. My son, Miles MacMahon, serves in the Prince's bodyguard, and is happy to see his lord excited.

Another report has come from one of our agents near Trim has come. The agent Finian, an treacherous assassin the likes of whom I loath, has failed in an attempt to assassinate the English Baron and general Maurice Fitzgerald. I say, good! This shall allow us, when the time comes, to face him nobly on the field of battle.

    Year of Our Lord 1260

A dispatch has come in from the governor of Cork, informing his Highness that a town hall has been built in the city. The high taxes that were necessary to fuel our never ending war against the English were upsetting the population somewhat. The construction of a town hall will allow the citizens to settle disputes without resorting to violence, something many cultures, including the brutish English lords, lack.

King Brian has assembled an army and has begun a march on the northernmost city in the possession of England on Ireland, the city of Derry. His host consists of many sword- and spearmen, as well as several units of archers, little cavalry, and four catapults to assault the walls. When he reaches the city, he should have very little trouble capturing it.

    Year of Our Lord 1262

News from Scotland! Our emissary in Scotland has informed us that the Scottish Kingdom and the Kingdom of Norway have formally opened hostilities! Both sides have requested our aid, however the King wisely chose to remain neutral. He decides this because our focus is currently on reconquering Ireland itself before we turn to prepare to invade the mainland of Britain.

Victory! King Brian has captured the large town of Derry, and has reinstalled Irish chieftains to rule there whenever he is absent. This victory has reunified the northern holdings of the Irish, and one can now walk from Lifford to Downpatrick without fear of attack from the English, although bandits may still prowl the land. This is a great first step to retaking the whole of Ireland from the English dogs!

Bad tidings for Prince Domnall's assault on Athenry! Our agent there, Nicholas, has been killed:

However, since we were already at war with the English pigs, the only thing that shall likely result is a fiery and empty denunciation from the English King and his slavish servants, the Barons.

Prince Domnall has married an Irish maiden, name Aideen Kennedy:

This union will hopefully result in many children and heirs to the throne for my future children to serve.

Well, that's the first five turns! More to come later. Any comments are welcome!

Good start! Looking forwards to the rest.

King Brian sounds odd though... Brian isn't what I'd call a kingly name!!! Something a bit Monty Python about it.

I don't find it as common as you do.
Brian Ui Niall? Sounds regal and its not as bad as the names that are Anglicized, which does ruin the experience for me a bit, as I can change the names of settlements in game, but characters require modding and I'm not sure if I have the space to unpack Kingdoms.

Yeah, I like Wales a lot, but they're too...Christmas-y. Ireland is great.

Thanks for the comments! Next update tomorrow.

Yeah, the chief reason I chose Wales is because of the tough difficulty. Earlier I had some plans to write a Scottish AAR, but I saw that they were fairly strong, so I wanted to pick a weaker faction, and Ireland is too secluded.

    But, great AAR.
