I'm thinking of joining the RAAF (Royal Australian Air Force).
Anyone on the board currently in the Army/Navy/Air Force?
And suggestions? Advice?

Well all i can say is that its good to see some really patriotic chaps who dont just sit on the chair & defend the country with words but with the determination of a true soldier. Good luck & wish u success in the field ... and hope Australia doesn't send u to Afghanistan or Iraq

Thanks IndianPrince... I won't be joining for a couple of months or a year though, I'm pretty out of shape. Got to bulk up. Fortunately the physical requirements aren't as nearly as bad as the Army.
you can serve your country without going to afghanistan. besides its normal to hope for that, i i joined the RAF i would hope to be stationed in Cyprus rather than the Falklands, both are serving my country its just that one is nicer.Uhh, Why not?
Isn't the whole point of joining to serve your country?
Why join and then try to shirk your duty?
@bernard, go to your local recruitment office, get all the info you can, research alot. try and talk to people who have done it and know what its like and if you still go ahead, good luck![]()

dont join the military, it's filled with morons.
If God were a man he'd be me.
At first i simply observed. But i found that without investment in others, life serves no purpose.
And the winner of most ignorant post known to man goes to.........Idwayreth!!
Who the **** do you think keeps you safe? Who do you think allows you to go about your daily life uninterrupted by foreign invasion? Who do you think it is that fights for YOUR life, and the lives of all the people in your country?
Don't join the Australian navy. All it seems to do is pick up idiot British explorers from the middle of the Pacific
well i just joined the airforce and will start basic in a couple of months and all i can say is always think about what you are going to do after you have served in the forces, i doubt you want to make a career out of it and like me i imagen you will do 5/6 years then leave, now during those 5 or 6 years their will be loads of extra training and qualifications offered to you as some of the perks and benifits in the job, always think "will this benifit me after i leave?" and always have a plan of what to do next and get qualifications aimed at that goal.
i for example plan to redo some of my gcse's and get an a level in english and maths.
I said hope they dont him there doesn't mean he has to REFUSE going there ... there is a difference between hoping & refusing !!!

By killing people in a country that was more of an ally than a threat?
Er... I'm not stupid "z0mg teh zolders invaydeed iragz". I was replying to Favre.
I was in the US Marines for five years. I served a tour of duty in Iraq (Feb03-Sept03) and in Afghanistan (Oct04-April05) I have worked side by side with pretty much every European military force.
In my experience the Aussies and Brits were the some of the best times. (Kiwi's in Afghanistan as well) Our brethren across the sea's are some of the heartiest and friendly people I have ever met.
I also got to spend a great amount of time with the Slovakian Corps of Engineers and the RoK Marines. (I did spend time with French, German, Kuwati, Iraqi, Afghani, and others as well. Just not as much)
All in all I enjoyed my military service and sometimes regret ever leaving it.
People who say people in the military are morons clearly have no idea about the calibur of the men and women in the military. I believe this is true not only for the US military but the military of all countries.
It takes a certain type of person to put themselves in a situation where not only their lives but the lives on their companions are put at risk. I would gladly have taken a life to save any of my friends from any country and I would gladly have given my life to protect theirs. Coming away from it I can safely say that any of them would have done the same for myself.
The bottom line is that no one likes being in the military truely. It's not fun and it never will be. The pay sucks, you work extremely long hours in hostile environments, you get treated like crap, and for the most part you are expendable. But that's not what makes the military great. What makes it great is what I tried to emphasize in the past few paragraphs is the brotherhood. By joining the military you are entering into a brotherhood that largely transcends language and cultural barriers, because in the end all militaries have the same end result and purpose. It's simply the journey that differentiates them.
wow, sounds like fun, especially being in Iraq in 2003. respect for that.I served a tour of duty in Iraq (Feb03-Sept03) and in Afghanistan (Oct04-April05)
