I remember seeing screenshots with unit sizes of 200 or more, but the largest i'm seeing is 150. This is rather disappointing, i was hoping to see large hordes of aztecs and whatnot.

There is a difference between screenshots for marketing purposes and creating a playable game. Off course units with 300 soldiers would have been nice, but pathfinding and lag would have been terrible.

Could be hallucinating, but can't you mod the amount of soldiers in a unit to up to 500?

Yeah, I agree - the current unit size is quite poor ... I have set unit size to huge and still only get around 120 men in a unit - for the largest units! I thought M2TW was an advancement in the series, so far we seem to have taken a U-turn in that the largest units in M2TW are half the size of the largest units in RTW. Even MTW had larger unit sizes.
No, there are limits.

There was an old bug in RTW where you could cue a unit up for retraining, and then use another unit to replenish it, allowing you to get the retrained men added to a full unit. This worked especially well with Phalanxes, where you could get near 400 men in a single unit. However, if you went too high, the game began to CTD. They have since fixed this bug, so it -is- possible to go over 200, but it doesn't work that great.
I think you can mod units that are present on the map already to 500, but the biggest you can make a unit that you build is 150.

that's from the developer's version with the enormous unit sizes.

You also have to remember that M2TW's units are far more detailed than RTW or the other Total Wars. I think someone said that a close-up shot of an RTW model is of the same quality that you get from a lod2 file.
So if you were to create unit sizes as big as the other total war games only people with hardcore gaming rigs could play them.

I mean to remember M1TW and STW having unit-sizes similar to this game?
The thing is there are plusses and negatives for visual display/unit sizes in battles. I don't see the current unit size as a negative (except there are less units on the field).
Unfortunately of a lot of users machines are incapable of rendering too many units on the screen at any one time as we know. So then, what is the point of having a company such as CA design beautiful looking game...if most users have to play it on low settings so that it looks like the original MTW (looks terrible now)?
My machine is capable of 10 000 units on very high setting with 8 x anti aliasing etc (8000 before any slowdowns)....but I am in the minority of users. Sure I'd like more units per battle, but the visual quality in this series would make larger battles a slide show on all but a few computers.
My Britannia campaign has quite small unit sizes, only 30 in cavalry and 75 max.

I think I remember in the M2TW demo they had unit sizes for Pikemen units initially at 192 men, at least the unit cards said so. IIRC, this was the first version of the M2TW demo and the amount of actual men in the unit was trimmed down to 150, though the unit cards said the unit had 192 men, just like M1TW.
Ok... probably not a question for this tread.. should go back to modding forum.. but how do we modify this.. I have no lag issues with the largest armies and highest graphic settings there is.. I can handle more men on the field....
If I was to mod my own files.. ideally.. I think the unit sizes should be broken down as such...
peasants/rabble etc- 400- 500
spearmen, pikemen, militia, etc - 300
Billmen, axemen, swordsman, etc. - 250
Archers, crossbows - maybe stay the same since they are so overpowered maybe 150
cavalry - maybe 100
Since we're here talking about it, how do you adjust the unit sizes?
Granted, I probably shouldn't since Kingdoms CTD's on me everytime I try to have a real battle anyway.![]()
I blame it on adding different skins for the units, just a few results in drastic decrease in unit numbers.
long live the clone total wars!
Go to the Kingdoms Q&A .... WOW.. looks like we can increase to 250 max per unit which was slightly larger than RTW...
although my computer could probably handle larger battles (I might have to reduce some settings though), I think I'm going to stick with these settings for now.
It's already hell trying to fit 120-150 men on some sections of city walls, it would be basically impossible to do it with more.
