Saving game to win

I have all kingdom games on medium difficulty and still having difficulty winning battles. Preparing for a battle I would first save the game then fight the war if I win I'll go and continue the game but If I lose I go back to the menu save and pull more troops and try different tactics. Any of you gentlemen using the save menu to win? I don't use cheat codes.
Love this game. I haven't played PC game for a while not since Halflife and Quake 2.
