Default Problem with X1950XT (or other new spec)

I've noticed that I get a lot of graphical artefacts while playing, using my new specs (I'd post a screenshot, but I don't know how to take one). What happens is random shapes/lines appear on screen, usually grey in colour. I think they're related to the shadows, but I didn't upgrade to continue playing MTW2 without shadows. They only seem to happen on siege battles, while a city is visible on screen. They usually go after I pause the game, but can anyone tell me why they're occurring at all and how to fix them? I'm fairly sure I running the latest ATI drivers.

Also, the game's struggling slightly on siege battles, so what's best to turn down, AA or AF? Finally, is there a way to make MTW2 recognise dual core?

    Many thanks for any help!

M2TW doesn't recognise dual core, and there is no way it can. Best to turn down AA, it's pretty pointless and is resource heavy.

As for the artifacts, could be a dodgy card. You say it only happens on sieges? This suggests a heat issue when the the card is under load.

Great!! Is there any way to determine if it is a defective card? It isn't doing it in all games, it is at its worst in MTW2. Surely if it was a defective card, it would be doing it in games like Oblivion and FS2004? Would it help if I reinstalled MTW2?

    Thanks for your reply.

Don't ATI have a temp measurement in the catylitic control center these days? Run that whilst you are getting artefacts to see if it is temp. If not, best bet would be to take it back to the shop, probably.

If it is an overheating issue (I don't know yet) will turning AF/AA down help?

Probably, but cooling the card down properly would be more effective. Check the temps then report back.
