freezes during loading screen right before main menu

hello, i skimmed other posts and couldnt find my problem so sorry in advance if this is solved and i'm posting it again.

i got the game when it came out, played it for awhile and everything was fine. Started playing it again 2 weeks ago and everything was still fine, then last week i got the freeze problem. To describe exactly how it looks like on my screen, when the loading progress bar reaches the end of it's bracket, it keeps plowing through it all the way to the edge of my monitor and just sits there and i have to ctrl+alt+del and end task.

Had no idea what it could be and since i did not update the game since release, i decided to do that. Still didnt work. So i uninstalled and reinstalled and still have the exact same problem, no matter what version i am trying to run. Really bummed out because i also bought kingdoms and still doesnt work. The only thing i changed with my computer recently was that i updated my graphics driver for the game Bioshock. I even rolled back the driver to see if that could have been what was causing the medieval 2 to crash and it still freezes. Every other game works perfectly.

Any help would be greatly appreciated since i just bought kingdoms and it feels like a total waste of money and seems like the only choice i have now is to format which i really dont want to do that heh.

I also dled the demo and it WORKS....for some reason the actual game doesnt no matter how many times i uninstall and reinstall, even if i'm doing really clean installs using CCleaner, etc

well no, it was actually my brothers game and we both installed it on our computers, he's away at college tho so when it started acting up i just decided to buy it now off of steam and yet i still have the same problem.

so now using the dled steam version, not even from the discs, it still messes up....i dunno...appears to be the only option is a format which i'm really hesitant to do
