    Default millitairy importance.

While the game explains it sometimes, often its not clear to me which units would be higher ranking than others.

Can someone make a list from king to peasant and all units in between for all factions?

I want to know this mainly for roleplay purposes. To get a better idea of it all.

This is a massive task. I'd be surprised if someone does it.

the costs, armour, attack, etc of the comparative units are a good indication. Its nice to have the slight mystery to it, that why you have to try different units, and find which suits your style of game best

    thanks

its not an easy task.. mabye heavy cav is good but pikemen defeats them, but at the same time sword infantry defeats pikemen, but heavy cav defeats sword infantry.. so it aint an easy task to achive

Basicly, just look at the armor and you can tell. Platemail armored troops are at the top, with heavy chain in the middle and light chain/padded armor at the bottom. Also, throw horses into that. A Man on a horse (usually not light cav) is higher ranked than the guys on foot.

Not necessarily. It depends on what's available for the time. For example, in 1080 the mailed knights are one of the highest ranking units (If not the highest ranking) after Generals bodyguard, because plate isn't available yet.

Just play the game, play every battle, play, play and after that keep playing.

Such a list will soon appear in your head. You will know which units work best in which situation. You will also have your personal ranking of units.

You will know that mailed knights won't break scottish pikes while Famiglia Ducale or Lancers just tear everything they charge into pieces.

The best unit in game for me are Pavise Crossbow Militia. They have deadly long range AP missiles, good armour, capable swords and cost 100 florins per turn.

Well some units are rather clear, knights are high ranking but how much did they have to say in a battle if they werent in command?

Sargeants are just the main infantry and militia are pretty much only for defending villages and their own province, both rich and poor classes.

But what about the more unique units? highlanders? Jannisaries? Christian Guard? Zweihanders? Its often rather vague.

Get off your ass and do some researching. I know the backgrounds of tons of the unique units but it'd take too long to type it all.

    Research is your best friend.

heh well I dont need an explanation for all units, pretty much just a list of order of importance. From King to Peasant.

One of the reasons why such a task is difficult is becuase for each and every fcation you would have a different list.

Your best bet is to pick a faction and then look at the EDB, units recruited from the royal armoury, will be more important than units from a barracks.

but I suppose in very general terms a rough guide would be.
    • Peasant
    • Armed peasant eg peasant archer
    • Militia
    • Average eg Swordsman, Mailed knights, Horse Archers
    • Quality eg dismounted feudal knights, Feudal Knights, Mongols Units
    • Elite eg Dismounted Italian MAA, Chivalric Knights
But if you are looking at effectivness, then things are different. Most knights will beat most foot, except pike, or archers behind stakes, most mace/axe will beat armoured if on a similar level, so any other compariosn can only really be made on a unit vs unit basis.

To err is human, but to really foul things up you need a computer.

well and the status of riding a horse differs per nation as well. The mongols and turks use so much horses that its hardly a status symbol anymore.

I am rather sure that jannisarry's are higher ranking than turkish horse archers and turkomans even while they always fight on foot. Or maybe they are less important because they are not turks.

Janissary are the elite of Seljuk armies. They were one of the first professional armies in Europe. And they form a wonderful backbone of all armies.

Also, there's a lot of units that can be considered elite despite not having a horse and an expensive weapon. What about Kiev palace guard? You would say they are weak cause they have no horse and are fighting with a spear? They can stop Famiglia Ducale! :-)

I like the default type of sorting units. Early, high, late. High units are always better than early, late units can beat high with ease.
