Map information impossible??

hi, i have a question for anyone who, umm, knows stuff.
ever since (in my last campaign) i got the message that my ally was annihilated when i thought they were doing just fine, i have been wanting to be more up to date with the stuff that goes around.
the only effective way to do this (except getting swarms of spies) is map information.

however, every time i ask a trusted ally they refuse to give me map information because they say it's too generous and can't accept it.
i have tried giving them everything from settlements or a huge load of money to very little money or nothing.
they just won't accept, and it gets a little annoying at times.

so... does anyone know how to solve this problem??

oh and also, if there is anyway to get the option "see what ally sees" in the diplomacy meny that would be cool. i don't think that would work, but i wouldn't know. Thanks again!
