    Default Alliances and general relations

    Well, basically two questions here:

Firstly, I've been finding it impossible to get alliances with any real powers after the first few months - playing in my current game as Germany, I can get relations quite high (170-190) and any alliance offer still rates as impossible. I'm at peace, but my prestige is low, and my rep high. How much does that effect it?

Secondly, how the hell do you stop someone attacking you as soon as your truce is over? Again in my game with Germany, Burgundy backstabbed a royal marriage to attack me a couple of decades ago, and has been renewing the attack every time the truce is up. Being allied with France (which holds a massive colonial empire), getting peace with either one is nigh on impossible - with almost every northern bugundian province occupied, all I could manage was a white peace with them; and with France, I've had to renounce the cores I gained upon unification one by one to get peace, as I am unable to beat their naval strength (and having three navies in the seas around denmark and sweden nets me huge % losses due to the blockades). At some stage, the Ottomans are going to DoW me, and if that's during a conflict with France/Burgundy, I'm screwed. Any ideas as to how to persuade them to leave me alone?

I believe there is a limit to how many alliances the AI will accept. I don't remember the exact number, maybe it was 3 or 5.

Don't know how to help you with your other question though, sorry.

You should read manuall on alliances - who is who and how it works ...
I actually figured out something after some time playing
But in your case it is unfortunate that two of your powerfull neighbours have allied .I would recommend alliance with Gr. Britain to counter French - but how to get it ...

Yeah, it's what I've been trying to get - but it stays on impossible, no matter what I try

I'll have a read of the manual on alliances later, then, when I've got a couple of hours to spare

@Estlander - interesting, that could be my problem...

Yes, besides vassals, no one will accept an alliance offer after you have 3 allies.

Gah, that'd explain it - I've got way more than 3 vassals/allies (4 or 5 at last count, though I'm slowly diplo-annexing them)

    Thanks

thatll be badboy, once your badboy's high enough most people will hit u regardless of the blockers you put in during peace time. (e.g as germany i had england declaring war on me all the time, i got relations up to near 200 and royal marriage but they still decced me once truce was over again).

Because after you diplo-annex a nation the size of France, it's impossible to get back below the threshold while still defending yourself from the BBwars; I just gave up and annexed everyone who attacked me

Well, they could probably see you as a threat. With all that Aztec gold, monopolies on sugar and tobacco production, ... you can possibly field the largest armies the world has ever seen. Your rivals or even friends would feel threatened, understandebly.
