    Default How do you keep generals from backstabbing you?

    Is it the loyalty rings in the character?

    I had a general as the governer of a city that bordered other factions and he was there for protection. I left him there a while and he lost a loyalty point because he felt "lonely" or "forgotten".

    I don't want any generals to defect on me. How can I prevent it?

    If you want to boost general's loyalty, give him something to do. Don't leave him in some god forsaken place in the middle of nowhere. Give him a small army and send him to chase rebels. There's always a rebel army laying around... Or you can give him a command of a larger army to fight some major battles on the frontier. Maybe just moving him around will improve loyality, but I'm not sure about that.

    The most effective cure for unloyalty is marriage with your princess, if you have any to spare.

    I must admit that I've never had a general rebelled on me, no matter how low his loyalty was.

    I had a princess, but I could not marry her to my single general.

    Does the game allow incest?

    I've never had it happen, but I'm pretty sure you can make the chances go down with a higher authority rating for your King/Sultan, or by having a larger garrison/army with the General (at least this will increase the bribe cost). The only way I think to actually increase the loyalty trait is to have the General in the same stack/city as a high loyalty superior for a little while, but I'm not even sure about that.

    If your general has low loyalty, I don't think it would be wise to give him a full stack force. If he does eventually turn on you, he'll end up taking that army with him. Or whatever units the Rebels can have.

    How about putting your king next to him? I know that in some mods, it increases their loyalty.

    YEah just give him something to do and his loyalty should either stay the same or go up. Although I have never had a general turn on me!

    Me either, I always make them go to war. I leave a few waves of reinforcements in the castles/towns. As for money, I use merchants even though it doesn't generate a lot.

    Oh yes it does.

    I got my faction heir to marry his aunt or something because I wanted him to get babies right away so that he will have an heir.

    That's not quite incest. They're too far away in the family tree.

    Still crossing a very dangerous line..
    In Medieval you can make your princesses marry their brothers. I think it's always good that you can do something, even if many don't want to.

    I want to: break up with the papacy and form my own religion, or revive the old one.

    It is based on loyalty. I usually just leave these generals in cities to become governors and eventually they will gain traits that benefit my economy. Some generals are for fighting, others are for governing.

    If you really want this general to be a fighter, make an army with two generals in it and make sure the general with no loyalty has higher command than the other general, therefore he takes control of the army. The 2nd general (with decent loyalty) will just be there for 'support.' Your army won't rebel, and your loyal-less general will start gaining loyalty points as you win more battles and take more cities.

    Dread = -Loyalty
    Chivalry = +Loyalty
    Death be not proud, though some have called thee
    Mighty and dreadful, for, thou art not so.
