I can't use it to attack the enemy.
Is the proper tactic to just have them walk right into the thick of battle?

You can "drop" the standard like how you would drop a ram or ladders to attack.
I see.
So how are the troops in battle?
On an M/M campaign, I have only used them once when I was given three for doing a mission. I suicide attacked an enemy leaders city and let them sally out and the three units managed to hold back and kill the suicide king, (who was the last one standing of his guards) one unit of arrows shooting at them, one group of light cavalry and two groups of spearmen. They eventually died at the hand of the spearmen but held out long enough to kill the king and cavalry.
So in other words, I don't know....
I usually take it up to the front line, but then drop it and let the men fight - they are often the best infantry in the battle!

Your troops do get a morale bonus when the stand is around right? Whether the men are attached to it or not..?

Wow, you people seem clueless... All you do is keep it in the back of your line and all the troops get bonus moral. You do not engage it in battle unless you desperately need the crew - as they are elite soldiers who will never rout. I'm sure the bonus still works when they're away from it, though their purpose is to guard/move it. The great cross works the same.
