There is a sticky for this, but the most popular I believe are Stainless Steel, DLV and Lands to Conquer.
However the reason why there is so many succesful mods out there is because different people like different things, so you would have to state what you liked and what you did not like about the MTW II vanilla version and then people could guide you with a greater degree of accuracy.

I was wondering the same thing. I finally got a new computer and will be getting the game soon. I'm into historically accurate stuff and lots of playability. Any suggestions would be helpful.

I would like a mod that allows you quick access to higher tiered military units(as in I don't have to wait forever for the castle to upgrade 3 times before I can upgrade the barracks to get better units.
