I can't defeat the French

when i first bought m2tw, i started a new campaign as the english. for my first time around, i decided to do a short campaign. i was able to destroy the scottish with no problems.then i decided to turn my attention to the french. i already had control of 4 settlements north of france on the mainland. so i built up my armies and started my invasion. i attacked the first settlement and i found out my army out numbered them 2 to 1. so i said what the hell and i auto-resolved the battle. it turns out that my army was defeated horribly. i can't understand why this happened. then i sent so reinforcements and attacked again, but that didn't work either. it's not like i attacked with a 1000 peasants, i had your standard spearman, archers, and cavalry. if you have any clue what i'm doing wrong, please tell me.

what is your general's command rating compared to french general?
command stars greatly affect auto resolve

in manual fight stars give nonus to marale....1 star 1 morale

Meh, I constantly lose auto-resolved battles that I could win easily actually playing them. Also if you're using mailed knights, peasant archers/spearmen, then yeah, you're gonna lose.

Just don't auto-resolve any important battles but only battles you can't lose. Like your longbowmen and armoured swordsmen against 3 units of peasants. Also once you have the complete British island including Dublin. focus on getting a good economy. Your cities on the island basically won't get attacked unless you have no more cities on the mainland. I always make about 3 strong armies and then just rush into their regions. Taking Marseille, Paris and Bordeaux in the same turn. Then leave some units behind in the freshly conquered cities and move further with your armies and build some units in there. So basically I'd start with getting a good economy and then pump armies into France. It's the best if you can get France excommunicated first.
