    Default The Emerald Isle

A Retelling of the History of the Emerald Isle

1180: Here in the remotest part of Europa... A group of gentlemen met... How quickly the world had forgotten who had kept the knowledge of the ancients alive through the darkest days that humanity had ever seen... It was the ancestors of these men that had nurtured the light of Christianity when the pagan hoards had done their best to snuff it out. And here they still lived on their Emerald Isle.

They laughed at death.... For the word of their savior was not just a means to power like so many of the warlords of Europa... It was their path to happiness and salvation in this life and the next. The Normans had raised the papal banner above their armies as they raped and pillaged their way across most of Britain. But their leader William had died a horrible death in France, deserted by his closest confidants in the end, his valuables stripped from his bloated body by his servants. Such was the judgement of the lord. Now these godless men were knocking on the door of the Irish and their cousins in Wales and Scotland.....Only united would the Gaelics
have a chance to survive. They had beaten The Norman's Viking ancestors back... They could beat the Normans back as well.

I hope I do it justice too fellas... My grandfather was the 7th son of a 7th son of an Irishman.... He would turn over in his grave if I didn't!. I'm going to make some interesting decisions and I most assuredly will not try to conquer the whole world..... Some info on the game settings and style....

    DLV: 4.0 with Bugfixer 3
    VH/ VH Difficulty
    Huge Unit Size
Vigorous Role-Playing...( As always with me )

This will be a slow and steady AAR and I will keep it going as long as people are interested....

IF YOU HAVE IDEAS ABOUT WHICH DIRECTION THE CAMPAIGN SHOULD GO... WRITE TO ME HERE AND I WILL PUT YOUR OPINIONS INTO ONE OF THE CHARACTER'S MOUTHS.... I AM HOPING THAT YOUR IDEAS WILL ADD A BIT OF CHAOS TO THE COURSE OF EVENTS AND FLAVOR TO THE CHARACTERS....EVEN IF IT DISPLEASES THE HIGH KING!!!!

Woot, fan service. Well how about mixing in some extra superstition in your rping? I must admit I know little about the Irish but their fairy tales but I'd really like to see a war caused by a leprechaun :-)

Why do all the Irishmen have Gaelic names but the places don't. Corcaigh not Cork. Baile Atha Cliath, not Dublin. Consistancy CA, consistancy.

Glad to see my brother is a General (Padraig, although he spells his name Padraic).

Thank you for the kind words gentlemen.....

Setanta..... I'm going to edit the story and replace some of the names with the true names you mentioned.... Please let me know if there are more of them that I could use as I go on. It's educational for me as I really want to learn more about Ireland... Which is why I write these stories to begin with really.

Furin...... I've got some interesting things I want to do just to see how the AI reacts..... Always letting prisoners go... Never sacking towns... I'm going to go after the Normans but not to destroy them, just to push them back to the mainland where they came from... That's the plan so far... I'm really not sure what I'm going to do after that perhaps a crusade would make sense... One thing I'm sure of is that Ireland would not try to conquer the world.... But who will betray them I wonder?

Since you asked, Tanaiste isn't a persons name, its the title of the second in command. The deputy prime minister of Ireland is still called the tanaiste. The names of towns are in English because by the time the campaign ends and for alot of the time in the campaign Ireland was under English control, Tir Chonaill would be the exception, ironically in Ulster, hence the Irish name up there (+ I gave them all anglicised names to start with and that was only changed a while back, curse my short sightedness).

This is good, keep it rolling. Go for Galway next (chaps in control there and in Connaught would be O'Connors), them and Munster (O'Brians and MacCarthys + their 'vassals' the O'Sullivans, the Deise boys, etc) were the most independent regions of Ireland at the time, Leinster (Dublin, under the control of MacMorroughs) was kind of against them and the High King and will invite the Normans over soon enough (if they haven't done so already at that time) and Ulster (under the O'Neills) takes no crap from anyone, but doesn't look for trouble either, its more of a "stay off our patch" policy from them.

I do not agree with the names, but only because I am a lazy bugger and cannot really remember names that go over three lines with lots of apostrophes and fancy letters. I am thinking of changing the names of my generals to Peter,Paul and Mary so the people can follow the story easier...

Actually, you are correct about Cork, but not Dublin. Baile Atha Cliath was the name of a small village outside of Dubh Lin. It's use as the name for Dublin today reflect the Irish Republic's desire to reinstall the Irish language into the culture. And it is not Gaelic...that is the Scottish language...the Irish speak Gaeilge.

"There is a difference between what is wrong and what is evil. Evil is committed when clarity is taken away from what is clearly wrong, allowing wrong to be seen as less wrong, excusable, right, or an obligatory commandment of the Lord God Almighty.

Evil is bad sold as good, wrong sold as right, injustice sold as justice. Like the coat of a virus, a thin veil of right can disguise enormous wrong and confer an ability to infect others."

We stand corrected Mighty Lord Condormanius!!!
    nice historical repertoire!

    @Xtiaan72
As for your proposed move on Caernarvon, - that is what happened in my English campaign, and the pesky Irish forced me to move North in search of new lands (and the premature demise of Scotland )

However their main army is AWOL (on Crusade) and they have left a meagre 1 unit garrison in the Welsh castle

    he he he...

    Keep up the good work!

1191 AD: King Heartach sat in the throne room in Galway with his chief military advisors..... His son Math and his brother Dairmaid.... the Prince of Tears...

" Word from our spy in Corcaigh, brother...." " The Scots briefly laid siege to the city but broke off the attack before any blood was shed..." Dairmaid mused as he paired an apple with a very sharp knife....

The Iron Princess.... Ireland's secret weapon...

" Hmmmmm... What could they possibly be up to? " King Heartach was visibly concerned..... Dispatch Admiral Roibeard to Scotland with Emissary Niell and Princess Fionna. " Perhaps he can talk some sense into them.. Or even better maybe she can charm the pants off one of their king's sons! " .... "After the princess is safely to Scotland... Admiral Roibeard is commanded to weigh anchor off the coast of Tir Corcaigh to monitor these unusual Scottish activities."

Roibeard was quite happy to execute the king's order, if only
to get away from his nagging wife!

Roibeard faces off a wily Scottish Admiral... The Scots have fewer ships but the ones they have are filled with Scottish troops.. The Irish Admiral is itching for action but his orders are not to attack without provocation.

    1193:
The strategic situation in Ireland had become very tense..... The Scots sent a small detachment into The High Kings territory... Heartach was not pleased.... Still Scotland professed to be his allies. Only there to protect King Heartach while his treasury recovered from the terrible war with Galway... Neills and the King's daughter were greeted as honored guests in Edinbourgh.

The people of Corcaigh grew restless because of the high taxes Heartach was forced to levy on them. Prince Dairmaid and his son Math convinced the king to send the few loyal Kerns he still had under his command to bolster the garrison there. Their captain was an O' Sullivan..

Loyal O'Sullivans settle down restless peasants in Corcaigh while The High King stares down rebels.... and tries to figure out what the hell the Scots are up to.......

ROFL!!! If only my EDIT was the true circumstance

I wish the scotts made their mind up already! I have suffered strange AI behaviour like this before. I usually put it down to the AI being slightly too late to capture a settlement (they have invaded by ship). The stack just stands there and the ships sail away leaving the army stranded. After a few turns of their compplete inactivity I just used the console command move_character to put the stack back in their territory

PS Nice new installment! Keep it up.

In this case I think it's because they don't have enough troops to actually take the city! Thus the aborted attack..... Love talking with you Lucillus...
