I'm at war with everyone!!!

I know this game is called "Total War" but I don't want to be at war with all the factions that surround me.

I'm playing as the Venetians and everybody is attacking me. I've built myself a solid empire and killed off the byzantines and all but 1 of the Milan settlements.

What are some tips for diplomacy?

Be nice, give tributes, keep alliances, you know, just be good to get more reliable and it'll be easy to be at peace.

If you play on hard or very hard, your relations with everyone go steadily down so its inevitable.

If it's still early on in the campaign you could get out of it by playing the chivalrous game, but it will take a while...

Build lots of churches, avoid attacking, release prisoners, offer money to the other factions, be nice during diplomatic discussions etc etc

If it's late-on though my experience is that building new relationships is very hard to do, and as far as I know even if you were allies with someone for 100 years, and then you go to war, getting them back on side is nigh on impossible.

There is no diplomacy!

Diplomats are only good to get trade rights, map info and allies that will betray you as soon as you share a border with them.

Even tho some people argue that this game is called total war which should translate to no peace, i disagree. In my games i like to create some sense of real diplomacy and civil action. You should download the Ultimate AI Mod, which will help out a ton. He has done a great job with not only the AI's ability to wage battle better, but the AI's diplomacy is very much improved. It allows you to keep alliances, achieve peace through certain actions. I have had great success with this mod. Check it out here ---> Ultimate AI

once you get to share borders with a faction. You can place money on the fact they'll start a war with you.

See that's the thing. The Holy Roman Empire, Milan, and France all share the same border with each other and are allied. And then on the other side, Egypt and Turks are at war with me. Now Holland wants a piece of me. I would also whooop on Holland's sorry butt, but I'm allied with Poland and Holland is the only thing between me and my ally.

Most of these wars were started through failed assaniations.

And then when they ask for 230 florins or else they attack, I say screw 'em.

My nation bows to NOBODY!!! muahahahaha

My reputation is Very Untrustworthy, but right below that is my strength, which is Very Strong. lol

well there are alot of good mods out there that can actually make an alliance work and diplomacy is a much more important feature, ive found from my experience that Ultimate ai mod is a good mod to play if u dont want the game to be redone to much but if u do then hey theres alot of good mods out there

It just got to be good.

I'm playing 3-4 battles each and every turn. My treasury is not increasing, but it sure is a lot of fun sacking cities and killing any generals that even come near my cities.
