    Default AlienWare?

My Dad got his 20,000 Paycheck, and he's planning on buying a new computer for my BROTHER. I'm planning to convince him to buy me one and give my gateway a memory wipe and dump it on my brother. If I can Persuade my dad...... Would you recommend an AlienWare? Does Alienware build computers according to your requests or do they only release certain models?

They are a branch of Dell IICR so if you've ever gone through buying a computer at Dell or Gateway, it's like that. You pick a model and then choose the parts from a selection. If you really want to blow your cash on pre-built, I'd say get a Falcon Northwest and have them custom paint something to your liking.

Alienware is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Dell, not a branch. That just means Dell gets all the profit from Alienware, not that they're particularly coordinated with each other or use similar websites or sales practices. Although incidentally they might.

In any case, I went there to compare prices with my custom build and found it very similar to Dell's down to the floating thing with the price on the right of the screen.

Just don't buy any of those gaming computers. You're always just far better of composing your own system. Even when you have it built by the computer store. Alienware and all that sort are too expensive.

Unless you really like extended warranties that is.

If you're stuck with a non-custom build (sometimes parents can be like that, my own parents didn't trust me to build them a computer, even after I built my own...) I would recommend something like IBuyPower instead of the very expensive Alienware.

I currently own an Alienware laptop. I'm satisfied with it. It doesn't crash repeatedly like my older HP. I customized it on their website. I did the same at the Dell website and the same computer by Dell cost more. I don't know how but I saw it with my own eyes. I don't know much about computers but as I said I'm enjoying my Alienware. And their customer support aren't from India (at least the one I talked to)!

I even heard their HeadQuarters was in Kentucky!

If It Runs better than Your HP, then they are truly the best computers you can get. As I have seen Gateways, Dells, And Sony's brake Easier than glass on Concrete.

    Thanks for the Info!

I have a friend who works at falcon northwest, they consistently win the customer service awards for their industry. Classy place, expensive as all get out. Around since '92, "building elite PCs for gamers and enthusiasts for years before other PC makers knew such a market existed."

I think I will give the usual response to a 'should I buy a pre-built system'-esque thread: buy your own parts. Much, much cheaper.

Tech hat off and accountants hat on.

May I suggest your Dad pays his check in and clears 20,000 of his mortgage, thus reducing his exposure, increasing his credit rating and reduce the amount of interest he has to pay. In long term you would be better of.

Of course if he doesn't have a mortgage, build your're own PC and get him to pay for the parts.

Ummm, Kinda think of that as his gift. He works for this rich lady that lost her husband so she depends on my dad to help her out. We Do have a mortage, but were almost done paying it off. Or so I'm Told. We have a great credit score so really, getting a new computer would be a good idea right now. Plus, If I wait till November, They will jack up the prices so high that Bill Gates might even have a hard time pulling money out of his wallet!

Errr.. What Upgrades should I get on this?:

And To Give you a hint, NO VISTA. There are not going to be anymore good PC Star Wars Games and I'm not buying Empire Total War so there's no need to waste a good hard drive.

What makes you think there aren't going to be any more good Star Wars games for the PC?

Because.... I lost all faith in LucasArts. If you haven't heard, Jim Ward is the new President, and ever since he's been in charge the games have become bad. The only thing that kept me playing them in the last year were my clan members and what was left of my Star Wars Pride.

Now Someone for the love of god Suggest my Specs, the earlier I can get it the earlier I can dump my GateWay On my brother...

    Hmmm...

I would say go with Ibuypower.com. My new rig is from then and I'm extremely satisfied (Now if I can get the fools at my university to give me an internet jack in my room that works! ). Even if I went with one of those extremely expensive companies, I would go to Falcon NW before Alienware.

I'm Only Interested in Alienware as the builders are gamer's themselves, their rig's are built well for gaming and go under certain "stress-tests" so they can handle games. Now Someone Do What I said Or else..... I have the money- Okay- my DAD has the money but still.

[Plus, It says on the Rome Box that It Runs best on AlienWare.]

Well the E6750 or E6850 CPU would be fine, but if you want to 'spend' the money then the Q6700 or QX6850.

A single 8800 GTX is good enough for graphics, but if you want to 'spend' the money then the 8800 Ultra or Dual 8800 GTX/Ultra's.

700W supply should be fine, but again if you want to 'spend' the money then the 1000W.

2GB of RAM should be fine, but if you want to 'spend' the money then the 4GB's. Not sure what brand they are using for their "Extreme-Performance 800" memory, but it will cost you an extra $475 when it can be had for much less than that.

Everything else comes down to personal choice. HDD space, DVD drive peripherals ect.
