Default No civil war and no riots in the other Roman factions

I just got Rome: Total War from a friend in a game swap. Really love it. Very addictive... This is my first time playing a Total War game and this is the first campaign i took on.

Anyway, i have managed to wipe out most factions, but i never triggered the civil war event i heard about. Probably because i have been really good and completed/made irrelevant every Senate mission.

The most peculiar thing though is that regardless of how much unrest/sabotage i have created in the other Roman cities, they never seem to riot, much less revolt. I know that other AI factions are susceptible to revolt because i took out a faction that way. Is this a bug? Can it be fixed with a mod?

PS: The problem started when i am playing version 1.0 and persists even though i have patched up to 1.5.

You Don't trigger the civil war by causing their settlements to riot, you cause it by not following the senate missions and conquering land.

What are the other cities public order? You need it to be below 70% for a few turns for a revolt to happen.

It is very hard to make Roman cities revolt. In fact, I have yet to see it happen. I think the Romans get a bonus of some kind, probably implemented by CA to make them more powerful.

The Civil War starts when you decide to attack your Roman allies or don't follow the Senate's request that your faction leader should commit suicide. You can only start the Civil War when you have gotten the "A chance for power" message.

The only Roman city (in Italy) I can get to revolt is Capua, and that doesn't even need my help, it justs overpopulates eventually.

Settlements revolting and the Civil War are two entirely separate things. All the Roman Civil War really means is that you are at war with the other Roman Factions.

Once your popularity with the people becomes high enough (around 6-7) you should receive the Chance For Power message. Basically it tells you that you can attack the other Roman factions now if you choose. If you do the Civil War begins. If you hold off on attacking, then usually sooner or later the Senate will outlaw you, usually after demanding your faction leader commit suicide. Then the Civil War starts.

I took a look at your save. Wow. Good work. I think what happened is that you never saw the Chance For Power. There is a bug in the game where sometimes the beginning of turn messages like that one do not display properly.

However, you can attack the other Roman factions now. I selected the garrison of Arretrium, marched them down to Rome and laid siege. You will get a message asking you if you really want to attack your ally. Just say yes and you will be at war with the rest of the Roman Republic.

What is the exact wording of the chance for power message? Is it "Your popularity with the masses blah blah...maybe ultimate power isn't so far away."

PS: I know that civil war and the riots have nothing to do with each other, i just don't like flooding message boards with threads when i can ask my questions all in one.

PPS: Why is the AI so stupid? In the battle map and all the other factions too... In that they have a HUGE army, but leave 2-3 units in a city as garrison and grouped everyone else outside the city? But that did make for a fun scenario in my save to take Rome using an inferior number.(try it)

PPPS: I used peasants to grow some cities. I checked some walkthroughs when i couldn't create revolts, why doesn't anyone suggest that?

Here is the Chance For Power message:

You are right, the AI is not too bright. But that is not uncommon in strategy games that are as open-ended as RTW. No one can make an AI as smart as a real human player. Once someone does, well, I suppose we humans will all be obsolete.

It was similar the first time I took Rome. I defeated a huge SPQR army outside of the city, then took the actual city with no sweat. It was a bit of a letdown yes. On the other hand, the field battle was exciting because I knew Rome hang in the balance.

you need 30 cities to attack your allies or for them to attack you but if you only listen to the senate and have more than 30 settlemants they wont attack you or you cant attack them .

Exactly how many cities and your standing with the Plebs seems to vary a bit. We talked about it some in this topic recently: http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showt...=111609&page=3

I finally got the courage to attack...

It's so frustrating controlling large armies in the battle map. I keep telling my units to do something and usually one unit follows orders, the others just stand under the enemies gates waiting to get showered by hot oil

PS: Yes, i am showing off.

Try to avoid giving orders to multiple units when you don't need them to stay in a certain formation. They go every which way but where you wanted them to go. The engine has problems with getting them both to go to where you clicked for some reason.

Also, use the pause button for large battles (a lot!). It really helps, and its the only way I can play multiple stack armies on harder difficulties.

For some reason, the AI Roman factions will never set off the Civil war. It's stupid, but I have never heard of it happening.
