the wierd thing is sometimes i get a kind who has 10 authority for no reason, he was just governing a city and somehow had this huge authority, so i think some of it is also just plain luck.

It's a trait that makes you lose authority as far as I know
I raised the issue in the Problems/Solution thread:

ya, from time to time (more than once) i am just like wow, this new king has 10 authority, and then he dies and his son has 0 despite conquests and i get mad at silly traits stuff.

The other way to improve it is to employ lots of spies and assassins (though you'll get lots of dread this way as well).
i get plenty of max authority kings, dont see what the big deal is. just make your prince an all conquering foe smashing warlord and after that he should have high authority and his children will usually take the authority from their dad (strong line of kings i guess)
On second note, what does the Authority really do? Higher loyalty for family members/generals?

i think that is right, i tend to never get strong family lines though, it always seems to alternate good/bad authority.

if a king has maximum authority it dratically reduces the chance of your generals and captains rebelling(e.g. you can safely send captains all over the world without them rebelling)
I think that dealing with rebels in your land should affect the king's authority wether he deals with them personly or lets someone else do it.
If a king does nothing against rebels and heretics his authority could lower if the problems become really big and by getting rid of them his authority could rise. Its only logical. If all spies and assasins and bribery attempts affect your king, there should also be things that affect your king that give authority and perhaps chivalry as well.
I personly think that assasins and spies should be linked to the governor that recruited them and if no governor was present in the settlement it could be linked to the king.
