Update on M2TW and Vista

Hello.

I posted earlier about this but was unable to resolve the problem.
I took all the game stuff off the system and tried to reinstall.
I cannot run the basic version, let alone any patch since going from XP to Vista.
Also cannot run Microsoft Combat Flight Sim 3, but can run DefCon, Civ 4 Warlords, Sim City 3000

I have a Dell Inspiron E1705Intel Core 2 T7200 @ 2.00GHz
2046 MB RAM
256 MB NVIDIA GeForce GO 7900 GS (no updates on NVIDIA site for this - there is for the GS variant)

Things ran GREAT before I got stupid and went to Vista.

What happens is this...
the upper left 1/4 of the screen goes black (the rest stays on the desktop background)
a few seconds later the M2TW screen with the Danish cavalry running through the town with a game hourglass spinning (this did not happen when in XP)
the opening cinematic opens and runs (I hear the disc stop spinning during this)
the game then goes to a loading screen (and the hourglass appears again) and then crashes to desktop

What I have done:

updated NVIDIA driver per Dell site
run all Windows updates
ran as administrator
installed as administrator
ran in XP compatability mode
updated BIOS, chipset, etc with drivers off the Dell site
system says my audio card is up to date
tried to turn down all resolution to minimum
reinstalled DirectX 9 version
reinstalled game
contacted Dell - no help
contacted Microsoft - no help but they did revalidate my Vista as genuine after trying to change drivers on my graphics card made the system think I had a counterfeit Vista
contacted Sega - no response

Try installing dx9.0c alongside dx10.

Thank you for the suggestion. I tried it but the installer says that a newer version is present and will not load the 9c variant.

Try having a poke around the microsoft website for a version marked as 'redistributable' - it was able to override the version checker and install nicely for me...

I did this and now the game won't even boot the opening sequence without severe graphics errors like severe pixcelation, abnormal colors, etc.

i have vista and med2 works fine. did your vista come on your computer(isit a new computer) or did you just upgrade?

OK - so I went and bought the Kingdoms expansion pack, unloaded the MTW2, cleaned the registry, reinstalled it, then installed the Kingdoms. All 4 of the kingdoms campaigns work. Perfectly. On highest resolution. Just like the old days. Awesome!

The medieval II STILL does not work, but now instead of part of the screen going black then loading, the whole screen does, then there is the title screen (with the hourglass spinning) then the opening cinematographic, then the loading screen with the spinning hourglass, then the CTD, still.

How can the Kingdoms, which needs the core game to run, be able to run when the main game itself is not running?

Kingdoms and M2TW work off different code bases; I guess the error's in the vanilla files...

Given that info, could the problem not be with my system (since it runs the Kingdoms program well) but some kind of a defect with the CD for my vanilla MTW2?

I wonder if I ought to buy another copy and see what happens...

Hard to say.

I can't think of any reason that problems with the DVD would cause the sort of errors that you're experiencing here

That is what I think too. Doesn't make much sense.

Is the problem related to the missing files on the system log? Would unpacking make a difference being sure to delete those two files that mess up the whole timestamp thing?

At least I am having tons of fun with Kingdoms - just wish I could satisfy my inner megalomaniac with the conquest of all of Europe.
