How do you destroy a faction?

Is it enough to just capture their last city?

What about their remaining armies and fleets?

yep...capture their last city or kill all family members. the remaining armies will become rebels and if all familiy members are dead their remaining cities will also become rebels

I'm trying to kill off the Papal States. I have conquered all of the Catholic factions(I'm HRE btw), taken Rome, and have stopped recruiting priests. Eventually there won't be any more priests to take over the position of pope..right?

I already won the campaing before 100th turn, and now its year 1532 and Im wondering how long the game will last. Im ready to bail out beacuse Im tired of managing that huge empire. Takes forever to move agents and stuff. And on top of that Poland is harassing me so can anyone tell me when does the game end? I dont play any mods so.

I'm at turn 211 and still going if that helps

Is it possible to play as the Papal States in a campaign?

Yep, just go to your Medieval 2 Total War Folder -> Data -> World -> Campaign -> Imperial Campaign. Then open the descr_strat (don't forget to go to properties and uncheck read-only first) and then just add the Papal States to the playable factions list and you're done.

Two methods:

1. Capture all settlements
or
2. Kill all family members age 16 and over.

As long as you do one of the above the rest of their forces will be turned to rebels. Thankfully there is no Horde system for factions. Except I think Mongols and Timuirds.

i'm playing The Long Road mod as England and as far as i can tell i have killed all there generals and they have 1 city left but the faction is still not destroyed. At one point 2 generals popped up but there was no faction leader. I've had a look around the map for him using the toggle_fow with follow AI on but nothing.

You have to win before (I believe) the year 1450, but you can continue to play after that and there are people who have played until the year 1750.

I was once at war with Germany when i was Milan. The War must have lasted about 12 turns because i killed all of their family members and i have absolutely NO intention of killing them off (Mainly because i wanted them to keep the French Occupied.

when i try to kill all Venices family charactars off they just spawn a new one on the next turn.

you could just siege all of their settlements, kill their general and withdraw.
but that would be rather silly

i did do this once in RTW in my attempt to make then a VASSAL. but when i made all my men withdraw this stupid unit of cavalry ran towards me causing it to withdraw, and when the popup 'continue, end battle' came up i clicked end-battle by mistake .

what a waste of 200 turns eh?

Probably someone came of age. Or if you are playing some mods they hired a general.
