Default MTWII + Quad core = no more stupid message?

    Hi All,

had a quick scan round the forum and couldnt see it so i thought this the best place to ask.

Currently i have a e6600 @ 3gig per core but if i upgraded to a Q6600 would i still be getting the annoying message in battles about not being able to bring in troops as my cpu needs upgrading? Does MTWII use quad cores?

    current specs

    e6600 @ 3gig
    8800gts 640mb
    2gig o' ram

You could just go to preferences and open it with notepad and go to unlimited men on battlefield and instead of zero, have it say 1.

I know that everyone keeps saying that the easiest way to get rid of that "reinforcements delayed" message is to simply change 'unlimited_men_on_battlefield' to 1 instead of 0 in the medieval2.preference.cfg file. However, I have searched the file many times and cannot fine 'unlimited_men_on_battlefield' displayed anywhere. I even tried just typing 'unlimited_men_on_battlefield = 1' in myself but when I entered the game it had no effect. I've updated to 1.3 and have Total War Kingdoms installed too. Anyone have any idea why this isn't showing up?

I was also wondering, whether to get E6850 dual core or the Q6600 quad, both cost almost the same, but how is their performance in M2TW and in M2TW: Kingdoms?

Does Kingdoms offer quad core support?

I didn't frankly find anything with google search, it just came up with game reviews which had no notions of game FPS, and it also found some worthless quad core discount offers.

M2TW does not have true dual core, let alone quad core, support

I'd stick with the cheaper core2

whattabout kingdoms? Well, ill get the dual core then, since it overclocks easier to about 4ghz which should be nice for M2tw and kingdoms.

The Q6600 is getting cheaper and given similar prices I'd go for the Quad (Future-proofing, though technically impossible with technology). I currently have an E6600 and will be upgrading to Q6600 soon.

Also as the above poster said, change unlimited_men_on_battlefield to 1 instead of 0 to remove the message.

Buying a quad isn't future-proofing, unfortunately; buying a cheaper dualcore and pocketing the difference for a later upgrade is

Think that depends on what you do - I know that if I upgrade, I'll benefit greatly from having a quad - translates directly into so many more concurrent tracks and synths I can load, for instance - I do music too. If you really want to stress a cpu, load up an orchestra with 100's of FX on all the instruments.

Yeah, but I see your point too - being bleeding edge can cost you, for most people it's wise to lag a a generation or so behind until the prices go through the floor. Plus stability - I'll probably wait until either Vista SP1 or stay with XP, maybe the 64 bit version, or if they still haven't got all drivers and utils upgraded, 32-bits even.

Did you make sure the preference file is not set to read only?

Yes, it is not set to read only. In fact, I've tried it read only and not read only and still nothing.

Actually buying an old Intel Pentium 4 Extreme Edition will be just as effective at increasing performance in M2TW, because it was programmed to run on 1 processor.

Of course, I'd suggest just grabbing a dual core and using one of the cores to play M2TW. When more games come out supporting dual core you will be glad you did, and even gladder you didn't shell out a grand for quad core when more games supporting quad core come out, because at that stage quad core cpus will be much cheaper.

    Just to chime in...

Since the E6850s and Q6600s are at about the same price level, I would go for the Quad Core.

I'd still go for dual, for slightly faster (at the same price point), slightly cheaper, and much cooler...

Either that or wait for true dual cores

    Hi folks,

Been away for a while (studying) but I'm back now. Just wondering, I've recently upgraded my PC (Q6600 Quad Core, 2Gb RAM & Geforce 8600GTX)and I want to get Medieval II looking as good as I possibly can. I maxed out all the in-game graphical settings but it still doesnt look as good as it should. I know there must be a section or a post somewhere on the site that tells me what changes to make to the preferences file but I haven't found it yet. Can anybody point me in the right direction?
