Do the 'phalanxes' that spear Hypaspistai use mimic the Greek phalanx
with it's defense bonus ? (I mean when they're charged from the front they
"lock their shields together with spears out")
What is the question again?
Here is what a pikemen has for attributes:
spear,long_pike,spear_bonus_8
and here is what the hypaspists have:
light_spear
and a hoplite:
light_spear, short_pike
The thing is that the hypaspists(presuming you don`t mean the sword ones) also have javelnis and i think you can`t give javelins to a unit that has the pike attribute, be it short or long.
Other then that I can`t tell you exactly what the difference betwen spear and light_spear is. Like a value difference.
From the EDU description:
spear = Used for long spears. Gives bonuses fighting cavalry, and penalties against infantry
Yes, but I think that it`s more because of the distance between them and the way they are arranged in formation. All units tend to lock shields when they are attacked if they are closely packed. What makes the hoplites act like a phalanx even though they don`t have the phalanx ability anymore is that light_spear, short_pike combination which the hypaspists do not have. Not having the short_pike can surely mean a difference in terms of the bonuses/penalties they get. Anyway, I`m not the best one at these things, but you were getting no answers so....![]()
