    Default The Greatest 'The Great'

Many rulers have been referred to as 'the Great' but how many deserved it? Who is the greatest of the Greats?

    Alexander the Great
    Pompey the Great
    Constantine the Great
Charlemagne (translates as Charles the Great)
    Alfred the Great of England
Louis the Great (XIV) of France
Charles the Great (XII) of Sweden
    Peter the Great
    Catherine the Great

LOLZ ... Well its so euro-centred again. There are SOOOOO many more one can add to that list ...

And they were "gr8" because who said so ? Themselves or some "ally" of theirs or general ... one cannot give someone a tag of gr8 just because other's call them so

    Ok, ok, ok, relax.

Akbar ''the Great'' the greatest Mogul Sultan, a great leader through his neat administrative policies, taxation (really just followed the policies of Sher Shah here but what the heck), his alliance with the Rajputs and so on. India has its greats aswell. Of course these things tend to focus way to much on the individual skills of each leader and not on structures etc. there might not be a great woman behind every great man but you will quite often find a brilliant, Wazir, chancellor, predecessor, favourable conditions for his rize to power and so on .

Anyhoo, the ''greatest great'' is really in the eye of the beholder, military, tolerant leader, uniter, political achievements, peacemaker conqueror etc, etc, etc. Id probably put Alexander high on my list, why because I feel like it.
    GEIR HASUND!

By the way, though my avatar might indicate so, I am not a citizen of Germany, though my ancestry have a branch in this great nation.

Considering it was a European way of recognising important figures in history, I'm really not at all surprised it's a list of Europeans.

Can I call the tradition of naming gifted swordsmen Kensei a Japano-centric list? Ofcourse I could, but I'd come across as an idiot for calling something that really only happened in Japan a Japano-centric undertaking...

Anyway... Alexander and Charlegmane I believe both have strong claims to their title as "the Great", as both were truly great men.

I agree, except I'd change the order:

    Charlemagne
    Constantine

A good start would be to check the list they have on Wiki. Link. I am not too much a fan of rating past peoples achievements as most of them were extraordinary in varying ways as to various purposes. I would rather remove a few of them from that list though. Starting with Antiochus.

Unrealistic? He was a maniodepressive maniac who didn't care either for his soldiers or horses. Something Frederick the Great greatly critized him about.

You don't hear it much anymore, but in the 19th century Swedish historians obsessed about Charles XII as a tragic hero, even though he destroyed sweden as a great power

I live in Sweden and i have never heard it before and i know he was depicted as a tragic hero and he was called Carolus rex, but the title the great has only one Swedish king ever got and he is Gustav II Adolf.

Canute the Great could be added to the list, allthough he wasn't really very great, some danes may think otherwise.

We had a queen up here in Scandinavia, I believe she was called the great. Her name was Margrete.
